Hello, and welcome to bSpace.
This short tutorial will demonstrate the various features of the bSpace Gradebook and Assignments
tools.
The first thing you will need to do in order to use either of these tools is to add them
to your bSpace site.
To add any tool, including the Gradebook and Assignments tools, go to your site in bSpace,
click on the 'Site Info' link on the side navigation menu, and choose 'Edit Tools' from
the top navigation menu.
For this tutorial, choose both Assignments and Gradebook and then click 'Continue'.
Confirm your selections and click 'Finish'.
You will now see the tools you just added to the side navigation menu.
Let's take a look at assignments first; click on the 'Assignments' link.
With assignments, in bSpace, you can create graded or ungraded assignments that students
must complete.
Assignment types may include file uploads, inline, rich media documents, created within
bSpace, a combination of these two, and even non-electronic assignments.
You may give an assignment a point value, specify an opening and a due date for the
assignment, as well as an accept until date for late submissions.
You may give instructions for submitting the assignments, add an announcement about the
assignment, and add an honor pledge.
You may even add attachments to an assignment, in those cases, for example, where there is
additional documents a student needs to read, or a template they need to use to complete
an assignment.
When you are done creating your assignment, click 'Post'.
Once you have created an assignment, you may view student submissions, and grade them directly
from the assignments tool, or from the gradebook, depending on how you setup the assignment.
If you chose to have the assignment submissions go to the gradebook, student grades for the
assignment will show in the gradebook tool.
To see a student's grades click on the gradebook tool link in the side navigation menu.
But the gradebook is much more than a colleciton of grades from the assignments tool. You may
create any number of gradebook items, such as class participation, presentations, and
so forth.
If you chose to have a particular assignment sent to the gradebook it will show up as its
own item in the gradebook as well of course.
You may also have quizzes or tests from the Quiz & Survey tool show up in the gradebook.
You may release individual items in the gradebook to students, or hide all gradebook items from
students at any given time.
You may choose categories and weighting for your gradebook items, so that you may line
up your gradebook with what's in your syllabus.
You may even choose whether to display course grades to students and what the grading scale
will be: letter grades, letter grades with +/-, or pass/fail.
Finally, you should know that the gradebook makes it easy to submit your actual grades
at the end of the semester. You may upload your final grades from the gradebook into
an Excel file that may be used to upload to E-grades.
This is just a short overview of what you can accomplish with the Gradebook and Assignments
tools. We invite you to attend our Gradebook and Assignments workshops, held periodically
throughout the year, to learn more about what you can do with these tools, in a hands-on
manner.
Go to the bSpace welcome page, or to the ETS website at ets.berkeley.edu to register for
a workshop.
