Well, i means when we first started most of our students were
either been brought in by taxis or
perhaps parents were bringing them in and they didn't have any independence at all.
so what we are trying to do
on an emergency basis really,
was getting our year 11's
ready to go for college so that they could
use public transport,
make their own way there so they could have some independence. As we've got
better and better at that, we've gone lower and lower down with the school
so now we are dealing with year 8's and 9's
and we are teaching them from a very early age really,
How to be to be independent, how to be safe
out there when they are in public transport or in the street
How to respect the community and everything that's around them.
And we've worked really well for that. Yeah
I think the very first person really
we had a year 11
that has spent his whole,
whole career
not sure about being out there in community
not happy about being on public transport
Feeling intimidated by the world out there
And we've managed to get him through in the first
piece of work we did
and he is now at college
He is very independent, he is very happy, And he is very successful and I dont think we would have done that
without the independent, quite
quite as well without all the independent trainning that we did.
Well i means,
one of the driving forces
the reason why we do everything we do
is so that our students could leave with
a degree of independence.
so they need all the skills that we can give them
but the most important thing is that they can operate as citizens and young adult
in a
in the world independently
without having to rely on other people
that's the biggest thing that we are giving them really
I means it's not as simple as sitting them down in the classroom
and telling them what they have to do
It often the missing bit that goes by
the the
training that the people have been able to do in this classroom
and all around the school and outside the school
is to actually go through the role play
go through the situations
that the students are going to meet and,
ask them to experience it
i mean in experiencing it that's how they learn, and they've learned very well.
Well, it is independence, again they can be independent , they've got that power really,
not to rely too much on other people
they can make their own life, they can develop they own friendships
develop their own group people
and become independent citizenship in a unity
which is everything that we 've ever wanted for them really.
usually enthusiastic when they see the amount of input that
we can put into it and more importantly
perhaps what we get from outside.
initially we get some reluctance, parents are very careful with their children as you know,
we all are,
so we want to be sure that they are safe. Parents, our parents have no exception from that
they recognize that being shift here in taxis is the safest and easiest way to get them to school.
they recognize that being shift here in taxis is the safest and easiest way
to get them to school.
so they are reluctant to loose that
but as soon as they see the young person is ble to grow and develop
that helps them to understand that it is an important thing to do
and they are far more supportive, much better
particularly, student become
more confident,
more together
generally speaking their behavior improve because they're more responsible
more relying on themselves,
as we said parents are far more supportive and they
recognize that the school is doing something
over and above
teaching maths skills and english skills
And it is good if you want your school to be successful
review of your school to be successful
it's a great way to show that it can be successful.
