Due to the design of API connections in the oil and gas industry,
over-torquing of tubing inside the collar can cause the pin-end threads to collapse
inwards, as demonstrated in this 3D rendering. With repeated over torquing,
incremental changes in makeup position of the connection occurs, restricting the
internal diameter of the pipe or tubing, as well as compromising connection integrity.
Over time, severe damage to the pin and collar threats require that they both
must be replaced; resulting in production downtime, in addition to handling,
transportation, rethreading, and other equipment costs.

Multi-Lobe Torque -- or MLT Rings -- are a unique, patented technology, designed and developed by
Volant Products Incorporated, and are available in a range of sizes.
MLT Rings are custom fitted to each application, by measurement of an
area in the coupling center, called the J-Section, and then installed using
a hydraulic ram. With the MLT Ring installed,
tubing connections can be torqued at a greater force without damaging pipe
threading, and connection integrity due to over penetration.
With MLT Rings installed torques of up to 3500 ft-lbs are
possible in 3.5" applications. This ability for higher torques
prevents backoffs and can reduce the need for downhole hardware, such as no-turn tools
and anchors. The MLT Ring also provides a smooth, continuous inner diameter
along the length of the production tubing, reduces friction,
increases productivity, eliminates wash-out and damage to exposed collar threads
within the J-section, allows for more effective use of tool running
and servicing with coil tubing, eliminates buildup in the coupling during cement Squeezes,
reduces annular turbulence, reduces the risk of connection galling
by preventing sand migration into threads, reduces rod wear caused by buildup or
bridging of sand in the coupling center section, and increases connection life.
