If you've been injured in an auto accident
or a slip and fall, it's not easy to choose a personal injury attorney from all the
ads you see on the Internet, on billboards, or on TV.
How should you choose? I'm Michael Elkins, a personal injury attorney in Brandon,
Florida,
and this is Part 1 of a video series and I'd made to assist you in choosing
your personal injury attorney.
In my opinion, you should first look for an attorney who limits his or her
practice to representing injured people, just like you.
Your neighbor may be a great tax lawyer;
your sister-in-law maybe a fine divorce attorney; but do they know the settlement
value of a case involving injuries like yours?
Do they understand the laws and the procedures that govern personal injury
claims in the state where you live?
Do they know the physicians or clinics in your area
who'll even treat someone who's been involved in an accident,
but who may not have insurance? Do they know what your legal
reimbursement responsibilities are if any of your medical bills have been paid
by health insurer,
or by Medicaid or Medicare? Do they have any experience in dealing with the
insurance adjusters
or the defense attorneys who will be evaluating your claim?
In looking through the various ads for attorneys you might see that some
handle personal injury claims but also practice in other areas of the law.
Although these attorneys may be qualified to handle a personal injury
claim,
my advice is to hire an attorney who handles personal injury claims on a day-to-day
basis,
not just as part of their practice. Do you really want your claim to be handled by
an attorney who's in court this morning for a traffic case
and drafting someone's will this afternoon? Personal injury claims
like yours are just too important to be treated as just a sideline portion
of your attorney's practice. I'm Michael Elkins,
an attorney who has helped the injured in the Tampa Bay area since 1988.
Representing the injured is all that I do. Check out my videos.
