one of the most important things as an artist and what sets this course apart
is
that you really feel part of something
it's about making those connections meeting people putting yourself in a
position
where you are helping people as well as being helped
the amount of facilities that you can use and the different
approaches that people have to using those materials
makes really interesting work and you're encouraged to experiment and play
with of all of those different things the facilities are really good
there's lots of cutting edge stuff like here in Tech lab we've got 3D printers and laser
cutters
as well as more traditional metalwork studios woodwork
and a ceramics room I've experienced it all and
gained alot of skills through it The Centre for Fine Print Research which is one of UWE's
premier kind of research centres over at Bower Ashton what the
centre does is kind of the lead research
in development of print technology and its application in
real industrial situations one of the great things about that is it means that
the students have
access to some of the most cutting-edge technology in
print in the UK at the moment
the modules that we run called professional practice and work experience
are targeting employability after the three years our tutors and lecturers
definitely encourage us to think critically about
how our practices sit within a wider picture in regard to business and also
enterprise
so an example of that would be the UWE undergraduate internships
this is an opportunity where current students apply to creative industries
companies
to have live on-the-job experience
having this studio at Spike is a massive advantage for our students
Spike Island is a a building that houses a lot of
arts-related organizations there's a gallery here
um there are artist studios upstairs
so you have a situation where an undergraduate programme is embedded in the
professional culture of the
Visual Arts in the broadest sense you're put in a more professional environment so
you are much more aware of the professional implications of what's gonna happen after
the course by by being in this location
being surrounded by very exciting creative people
definitely put me in good stead for my future career our students
leave here with an excellent knowledge of
what happens in the arts industry they also
leave with a very strong sense of self-confidence
and also they have refined their skills and self-discipline which is a
a major advantage when you go into the world of employment
the combination of facilities between Bower Ashton and Spike Island
really put this course ahead
you have all the teachers on hand you have space you have the facilities
as well as the time and the people and the resources
that make this course really unique
