Today we are talking about drawing and drawing papers.
and we are going to talk about some we use for my drawing classes.
and some things to look for with drawing papers in general
for I've got a couple different drawing pads here.
this is these are all Strathmore these are good
papers to use. Canson also makes
Canson makes some great papers.
things to look for
what pound is the paper. Look for the paper pound in the lower corner
this is like 106 pound paper.
This is Strathmore 500 series it's a nice paper to use.
It has kinda of a off white cream color
to the paper.
if the paper a has color you are losing value range.
So if a paper is cream colored
I have lost my ability to have whites in drawing
so I look for papers that are brilliant white
there are a lot of papers like that.
Arches watercolor paper for my drawings but you don't need to use
that expensive a paper. Strathmore makes great papers. Look for
paper pounds make sure it is over 70 lb paper.
That means the paper is a little heavier
so it sturdy and
has more strength to it
and will hold up to more aggressive drawing techniques
and it will usually hold more graphite than
If you're using something like
printer paper or news print
or some thinner sketch paper. The other thing you want to look for
is texture. All of these are medium texture papers.
Most artists will use a medium texture paper because it holds
the graphite. So you get richer darks on a medium texture paper
than on smooth paper.
Smooth paper are sometimes referred to as plate or high plate
meaning there's no texture whatsoever. It's just slick.
So you can't get as dark on smooth papers.
Medium texture papers are good all-round papers. So all these
are medium texture papers and
they're really really great for drawing. The
difference between these papers is are that this a 500 series and this
a 400 series. The 400 series has a little darker color
more like an antique white
I guess you'd say that this ivory as opposes to this
which is a little lighter of
the two.I like the lighter paper
a lot more. The size is
11" x 14"fourteen which is large enough to do a drawing.
This what I use in my classes.
Sometimes we will use 16" x 20" papers in my classes
or 18" x 24" depending
on the type of drawing we are doing.
This is another type of paper. It's called Bristol is
or Bristol Board it's like light illustration board is much thicker
the other two papers. it's a two-ply so it's again thicker
It's a medium surface paper called vellum.
It's still a medium textured paper
and it's great for drawing.
A lot of people use Bristol board because you can use multimedia with it.
You can use markers and other types of media together and just mix up your
your media that you're using. If you're doing an illustration
and you want to do a little
marker,a little watercolor, graphite and charcoal
whatever and just mix it up
this is a great paper to use.I know a lot of artists use
this for their very detailed drawings. Since it 2 ply it has a little more
give to the paper. Very much like
printmaking papers or watercolor papers.
All that means is the paper is softer as you make a mark.
So I can get a rich a darks on this paper.
So I prefer these others.
This is still really good paper. Another thing to think about
this is tape bound. There is no
a wire binding on it. I prefer the wire bindings
because the paper will stay in place. The binding won't fall apart.
They're much hardier. With the tape bound papers
They can break down and your paper just falls out.
And all that stuff. This is just something
I like to consider as well
I don't like my sketchbooks falling a apart and if you get wire bound they won't.
So use paper that is over 70 pound
You want medium texture paper "Medium or Vellum"
It will say somewhere on the pad the texture of the paper.
You can get papers in smooth or medium
sometimes even coarse. Where they have
a very coarse texture.
Remember if you buy Bristol board
that you want to make sure it is a Vellum texture.
You don't want Plate or Smooth.
It will usually say smooth sometimes you find it using the
term plate which is just completely slick
Use good paper for you drawing. That way you
will have more successful drawings.
That way you will be able to create more value.
You'll be able to get a little bit more with the detail
and technique and just all kinds of good stuff. So paper is
a very important factor doing your drawings.
