My grandmother told me a story when I was little.
She said that tong yuen was eaten to celebrate the winter solstice.
At this time of every year, the kitchen God
which has a small little altar, located in my grandma's kitchen,
will go to heaven to report everything
that he has heard in the kitchen, and in those days
women do gossip in the kitchen. So Grandma says,
she will make him tong yuen which is served with a very gingery sweet soup.
So that when he gets to heaven to report
he's unable to speak because the glutinous rice ball
has kept its mouth shut and the sweetness
of the soup will only make him smile. This
is my favorite tong yuen stall. It is located
in Klang. The tong yuens are made fresh
as you order and while waiting to be served.
There's always a queue so just be ready to wait for your order.
Here it comes!
