JACOB SOBOROFF: Hey, it's Jacob.
Today, we've got zombies attacking vloggers.
[GROWL]
[KICK]
JACOB SOBOROFF: Grace Helbig turns a million.
GRACE HELBIG: Stop ignoring me!
JACOB SOBOROFF: And the secrets to going viral.
[SONG]: Cats, cats, laughing babies, people falling,
hot, hot ladies.
JACOB SOBOROFF: Warm up your vocal cords.
This is YouTube Nation.
[THEME MUSIC]
JACOB SOBOROFF: Our friends' advice are all
about exploring the uncomfortable truths.
Which is why we want to point you
to their new doc "Young and Gay in Putin's Russia."
MILENE LARSSON: Last year, Putin passed an anti-gay propaganda
law that makes it illegal to tell minors
that it's OK to be gay.
So we traveled to Russia to speak to young people
in the LGBT community about the effects
of the state-sanctioned homophobia.
YOUNG MAN: [SPEAKING RUSSIAN]
WOMAN: You really can get killed in broad daylight in this town
during a gay rights protest.
MILENE LARSSON: I knew there would be instances of violence,
but I was shocked by how much prejudice I encountered.
YOUNG MAN: [SPEAKING RUSSIAN]
YOUNG MAN: [SPEAKING RUSSIAN]
YOUNG MAN: [SPEAKING RUSSIAN]
JACOB SOBOROFF: Thanks, Milene.
All five parts of the doc are up on Vice's channel.
This is an important and unfiltered look
at what's going on in Russia right now.
BEN: I'm a good guy.
I do nice things for people.
I'd like to say it's always been for the right reasons.
But the new short from Wongfuproductions
is calling me out.
GIRL: Believe it or not, guys and girls can be just friends.
GUY: A guy that wants to be friends and a guy that
wants to be more than friends, they act differently.
GIRL: Like how?
VOICEOVER: Friends.
GIRL: Ooh, "Gossip Girl" is streaming!
GUY: What?
GIRL: I know, I know.
GUY: Who cares?
VOICEOVER: More than friends.
GIRL: Ooh, "Gossip Girl" is streaming!
GUY: What season should we start on?
BEN: These guys have been making videos together for 10 years.
And it shows in the quality of the work.
Which is probably why they've gotten 300 million views.
We all know someone who could benefit
from watching this video.
Do what I did-- share the video and also give them a laugh.
JACOB SOBOROFF: If you've spent any time
at all on the internet, chances are you've run into a troll.
Here's a comment that I got the other day.
"Can you step back a bit from the camera?
Your face is creepy when it's so close.
Thanks in advance."
But you really can't let these guys get to you.
PBS Idea Channel's most recent video
digs deep into the facets of internet trolldom.
MIKE: Why would a troll choose to spend their free time
being a jerk to strangers?
Well, there are lots of reasons.
Some trolls would say that it's simply fun.
Some would say there's a certain justice to it, keeping
the ignorant or gullible busy and, therefore,
out of other people's business.
JACOB SOBOROFF: Spoiler alert-- they're complicated creatures,
so complicated that Mike actually
changed his mind halfway through the video.
MIKE: Argh, nope.
Don't agree with that.
JACOB SOBOROFF: Watch the whole video, tell us what you think.
And by the way, Greedo shot first.
CARLY: One movie starring all of my favorite British filmmakers?
Is it Christmas?
Directed and co-written by Hazel Hayes,
the film is chock-full of big names,
including tomska, charlieissocoollike,
Jack Howard, Michael from vsauce,
Ben Cook, pleasantryan and many, many more.
[ZOMBIES GROWLING, PEOPLE SCREAMING,
AND DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]
TOMSKA: Charliesocoollike just stole my sandwich.
CARLY: Hazel was inspired to make this
after posting a vlog about all the people
that she'd want to be with when the zombie apocalypse finally
went down.
It's amazing seeing all of these creators come together.
It's what I absolutely love about online video.
So go, watch it now.
JACOB SOBOROFF: Grace Helbig just posted this video
on how to choose a career.
And her advice is as amazingly nerdy and charming
as you could ever hope.
GRACE HELBIG: Choosing a career is
like using a significant other.
And here's why.
You want to make sure that they're as attractive in person
as they are online.
That when you talk about them to your friends, both you
and your friends are excited about it.
There's something you can see yourself
doing 10 years from now.
JACOB SOBOROFF: Grace has been posting
videos for six years now, which makes
this announcement from three weeks ago pretty big deal.
GRACE HELBIG: I had a contract with a company called
mydamnchannel.com, and the contract came to an end.
And both parties are moving forward
in different aspects of life.
JACOB SOBOROFF: She just hit one million subs
on her Current Channel.
And she was also named a Forbes' top 30 under 30.
You've been praised.
VOICEOVER: Stump Earnest.
JACOB SOBOROFF: OK, Earnest.
Today's challenger is FlaMe.
VOICEOVER: I recently started another YouTube channel.
Can you find a video with every single YouTube tip possible?
EARNEST: FlaMe, I have found the perfect video for you.
But first, let me ask you a question.
Did you know that cashews come from a fruit?
[SONG - TOBUSCUS, "VIRAL SONG]
[SONG]: Did you know that cashews come from the fruit?
EARNEST: This informative little number
is worth paying attention to.
Its creator, Tobuscus, has 13 million subscribers
across three channels.
JACOB SOBOROFF: If you think that you could best Earnest,
drop your challenge with the hashtag #stumpearnest.
All right, that's the week.
