In this clip we're going to learn how to calculate torque. Torque is the concept in physics.
And it sounds really hard, torque. But you know every time that you turn a wrench you
are doing torque. Every time that you go to take the wheel off your car, and you use your
wrench to turn you create torque. When you use a screwdriver to screw something in, you're
using torque. Torque is defined as the force times the R, the momentum. So here is, let's
say that you have a wrench, here's a wrench. Think of that as a wrench, okay. And you're
going to apply force, down here. So when you apply this force which is your arm pushing
this thing is going to turn, and that's your torque. This is the R, this represents the
R or the radius, known as the moment arm. They use it in engineering a lot, okay. So
torque is equal to force times moment arm. And the greatest amount of torque is created
when the force is applied at ninety degrees to the moment arm, which is the length of
the wrench in this case. That's when you create maximum torque. And there's other ways of
calculating torque at an angle which involves trigonometry.
