17:30:03:09 17:30:13:15 >>> Good evening and welcome to
17:30:13:15 this special vote 2014 edition 17:30:13:15 of "Arizona Horizon."
17:30:17:15 Im Ted Simons. 17:30:18:21 Tonights show is a debate.
17:30:20:09 Well hear from candidates 17:30:20:09 competing in the Republican
17:30:20:09 primary for congressional 17:30:20:09 district nine.
17:30:24:12 As with all of "Arizona 17:30:24:12 Horizons" debates, this is
not 17:30:24:12 a formal exercise.
17:30:28:24 Its an open exchange of ideas, 17:30:28:24 an opportunity for give and
17:30:28:24 take between candidates for one 17:30:28:24 of the states most important
17:30:28:24 offices. 17:30:35:18 As such, interjections and even
17:30:35:18 interruptions are allowed, 17:30:35:18 provided that all sides get a
17:30:35:18 fair shake. 17:30:40:15 Well do our best to see that
17:30:40:15 happen. 17:30:43:06 Congressional district nine is
17:30:43:06 Arizonas newest district. 17:30:45:21 It was created after the 2010
17:30:45:21 census and covers much of the 17:30:45:21 east valley, along with areas
17:30:45:21 of central and north-central 17:30:45:21 Phoenix.
17:30:53:03 Two Republicans are running in 17:30:53:03 the GOP primary for C.D. 9.
17:30:53:03 They are, in alphabetical 17:30:53:03 order: Former Air Force pilot
17:30:53:03 and businesswoman, Wendy 17:30:53:03 Rogers, and former ASU and NFL
17:30:53:03 quarterback Andrew Walter. 17:31:05:06 Each candidate will have
17:31:05:06 one minute for opening and 17:31:05:06 closing statements.
17:30:03:06 Earlier, we drew numbers to see 17:30:03:06 who goes first, and that honor
17:30:03:06 goes to Wendy Rogers. 17:31:16:00 >> I'm Wendy Rogers, a retired
17:31:17:18 Air Force lieutenant colonel, 17:31:19:12 one of the first 100 women
17:31:21:09 pilots in the Air Force. 17:31:23:06 A mom, a grandma, a small
17:31:26:00 business owner with me husband. 17:31:28:18 We meet a payroll.
17:31:29:18 I'm running for Congress 17:31:30:15 because something is wrong in
17:31:35:09 this country. 17:31:35:18 Washington is broken and that
17:31:36:03 has affected us here in 17:31:38:12 Arizona.
17:31:39:00 We have a porous border, we 17:31:41:18 have a rampant immigrant
17:31:43:21 problem. 17:31:44:03 The Phoenix V.A. hospital has
17:31:46:12 failed our veterans. 17:31:48:09 There's a clear choice here.
17:31:51:09 You can vote for me, someone 17:31:53:12 who has served her country,
17:31:55:06 honorably, or you can vote for 17:31:57:24 my opponent, a man who refuses
17:32:02:21 to admit that this is a problem 17:32:06:15 here in our country.
17:32:08:09 And we have a border problem 17:32:11:03 where we will have to address
17:32:13:03 it. 17:32:14:15 This requires leadership.
17:32:16:06 It requires conviction and 17:32:18:09 backbone.
17:32:19:03 I will be that woman for you in 17:32:20:09 Congress.
17:32:21:00 >> All right, thank you very 17:32:21:18 much.
17:32:22:00 And now, Andrew Walter with his 17:32:24:03 opening remarks.
17:32:25:12 >> Thank you, ted. 17:32:27:24 You may remember that I played
17:32:29:09 quarterback and captained the 17:32:30:21 football team at asu.
17:32:32:18 I also played in the NFL. 17:32:34:00 When I left I went back to asu
17:32:36:27 to start a lending business and 17:32:38:06 my wife and I, we just
17:32:40:00 celebrated our first year of 17:32:42:00 marriage.
17:32:42:06 This town has been so good to 17:32:43:09 me.
17:32:43:24 And that's why I'm running, to 17:32:45:09 give back.
17:32:47:09 I'm running because I believe 17:32:48:27 we've reached a unique point in
17:32:50:15 American history. 17:32:52:00 I believe the challenges that
17:32:53:00 we face are generational in 17:32:54:27 nature.
17:32:55:18 When I think back to my playing 17:32:56:24 days, I could sum it all up in
17:32:58:15 one word, accountability. 17:33:00:18 Wins, losses, touchdowns,
17:33:02:21 interceptions, I never made 17:33:05:00 excuses for my performance.
17:33:06:21 I was always accountable for my 17:33:08:15 actions.
17:33:09:06 I'll do the same in Congress. 17:33:11:27 My opponent has spent tens of
17:33:13:27 thousands of dollars viciously 17:33:16:00 attacking me personally, my
17:33:19:06 past and she's being very 17:33:21:06 dishonest about her positions
17:33:22:15 on Social Security. 17:33:23:24 I find that to be troubling
17:33:25:03 because that's not 17:33:26:03 accountability.
17:33:26:24 That's not leadership. 17:33:27:24 >> Okay, we'll stop it right
17:33:29:24 there. 17:33:30:00 Let's get things going here
17:33:30:21 Wendy we'll start with you. 17:33:32:12 You ran a couple of years ago.
17:33:33:21 Voters said no. 17:33:34:21 You're running again.
17:33:36:00 Why? 17:33:36:21 >> I want to serve my country.
17:33:38:21 I'm not a quitter. 17:33:40:09 I narrowly lost the Republican
17:33:42:00 primary last time with seven 17:33:44:00 Republicans in the primary by
17:33:46:00 only 700 votes. 17:33:48:03 Washington is broken.
17:33:50:03 This has affected us here at 17:33:52:03 home with the V.A., with the
17:33:54:06 border. 17:33:55:06 What is required is a call for
17:33:57:24 service on my part. 17:33:59:00 I will go to Washington with
17:34:01:09 backbone, with leadership, with 17:34:02:24 business success experience.
17:34:05:18 We have been working very hard 17:34:08:06 for two years.
17:34:08:27 We are one of the top 10 17:34:09:27 campaigns in the country and I
17:34:10:18 will win this primary. 17:34:11:27 >> Andrew, conversely, Arizona
17:34:13:09 first time candidate and the 17:34:15:21 first office you're running for
17:34:17:09 is United States Congress. 17:34:18:15 Why?
17:34:19:06 >> Because I think so many of 17:34:20:18 these decisions nowadays are
17:34:22:03 made in Washington. 17:34:22:27 I find that to be unfortunate.
17:34:24:21 Federalism and states rights 17:34:26:00 and individual sovereignty are
17:34:28:09 the reason and the reason why I
17:34:29:24 decided to run for this office 17:34:31:03 is because I think we have a
17:34:32:12 massive leadership deficit now 17:34:33:27 more than ever in Washington.
17:34:35:24 You know, elections aren't 17:34:37:06 about candidates.
17:34:38:12 They're not about us. 17:34:39:18 It's about the people and the
17:34:41:15 moment that we forget that I 17:34:42:18 think that is the first step
17:34:44:03 towards becoming out of touch. 17:34:46:21 That's not me, that's not my
17:34:47:24 history, and so now more than 17:34:50:12 ever when we have somebody in
17:34:52:06 office who's advocated for a 17:34:53:21 V.A. style single payer system,
17:34:57:15 that's not my description, 17:34:58:12 that's actually Paul Kroghman
17:35:00:27 of the New York times. 17:35:03:06 That system, not the medical
17:35:04:21 professionals, but that system 17:35:05:27 treats people like units, cogs,
17:35:08:15 we're not units or cogs. 17:35:10:21 We're human beings.
17:35:11:00 And we need change. 17:35:11:24 >> You mentioned in your
17:35:12:18 opening statement that your 17:35:15:21 opponent -- you said she did
17:35:19:15 not seem as concerned about 17:35:20:21 immigration, what were you
17:35:21:24 saying there? 17:35:22:18 >> The Arizona republic has
17:35:24:18 said that my opponent is 17:35:26:09 clueless on the border.
17:35:28:21 You have not ruled out amnesty. 17:35:32:09 You did not understand what the
17:35:33:21 gang of eight -- 17:35:34:21 >> Let me jump in here.
17:35:36:03 >> I'm not done. 17:35:37:00 >> Let's --
17:35:38:03 >> Let her get through the 17:35:38:27 first half of the statement,
17:35:40:18 please. 17:35:41:09 >> We don't have time for on
17:35:42:06 the job training. 17:35:43:18 We don't have time to send
17:35:45:21 someone to Congress who has not 17:35:46:24 led, who has not served this
17:35:48:15 country. 17:35:49:09 >> I've been a leader actually,
17:35:50:06 I've been a team captain for 17:35:51:06 three years.
17:35:51:15 The only player in Arizona 17:35:52:18 state history that actually has
17:35:53:24 that distinction, but let me 17:35:55:06 say this, Matt salmon has
17:35:56:27 proposed a bill cosponsored by 17:35:59:06 every single member of our
17:36:00:09 delegation that deals with 17:36:01:12 immigration so let me say on
17:36:02:18 the record, in case you missed 17:36:04:24 it, I am categorically opposed
17:36:06:18 to amnesty. 17:36:08:15 Moreover I take that next step
17:36:10:12 and talk about specifics, 17:36:11:18 something that I wish you did
17:36:13:06 more of with regard to amnesty 17:36:14:18 and immigration.
17:36:15:21 I have supported Matt salmon's 17:36:17:09 bill, H.R. 5053 which
17:36:19:21 essentially reforms the act and 17:36:21:27 it allows the United States
17:36:25:15 federal government to reunite 17:36:27:06 these minors with their parents
17:36:29:03 or guardians in their country 17:36:30:15 of origin so I've done the next
17:36:33:03 step, something that you 17:36:33:24 haven't done.
17:36:34:27 >> You are for reuniting these 17:36:37:09 children are whom?
17:36:39:06 >> With their parents or 17:36:40:00 guardians in their country of
17:36:41:06 origin, that is a very 17:36:42:06 important distinction.
17:36:44:09 In their country of origin -- 17:36:46:09 >> Is that in the United
17:36:47:12 States? 17:36:47:24 >> Categorically opposed to
17:36:48:24 amnesty. 17:36:50:03 No, that is not in the United
17:36:51:21 States. 17:36:52:03 >> Be specific.
17:36:52:21 >> Actually, I have been 17:36:53:09 because unlike you I've taken
a 17:36:55:00 position on Matt salmon's bill.
17:36:57:09 What is your position on that 17:37:00:00 bill?
17:37:01:06 >> I know what my core 17:37:02:12 positions are.
17:37:03:12 >> So you don't know the Matt 17:37:04:24 salmon bill, that's been --
17:37:06:18 >> May I finish? 17:37:07:21 >> Give us your position.
17:37:08:18 >> Absolutely. 17:37:09:00 We must secure the border.
17:37:10:27 Can we secure the border, will 17:37:12:12 you secure the border if you go
17:37:13:27 to Congress? 17:37:14:21 How will you do that
17:37:15:24 physically? 17:37:16:24 How will you acquire the
17:37:18:00 political will? 17:37:19:00 How will you work worth people
17:37:22:09 to secure the border? 17:37:23:21 Secondly how are we going to
17:37:28:12 handle these children that have 17:37:29:09 come through?
17:37:30:00 They need to be returned as you 17:37:31:24 say to their country.
17:37:33:18 How are you going to expedite 17:37:35:00 that?
17:37:35:12 How are you going to enforce 17:37:36:12 the rule of law?
17:37:37:24 We have to enforce the rule of 17:37:40:00 law.
17:37:40:18 We have to secure the border. 17:37:43:12 >> I'm categorically opposed to
17:37:44:24 amnesty. 17:37:45:12 >> The human trafficking law,
17:37:46:24 should that be amended? 17:37:48:09 >> Well, like I said, Matt
17:37:49:06 salmon's bill which deals with 17:37:51:18 the act, which essentially
17:37:54:15 deals with what you're talking 17:37:56:03 about.
17:37:56:27 It expands the scope to include 17:37:59:00 countries from Central America.
17:38:01:12 So that is an amendment 17:38:03:06 essentially to that bill and
17:38:04:12 that's why I've been very 17:38:05:18 outspoken and very detailed
17:38:07:06 about my support of that. 17:38:08:21 >> But the 2008 human
17:38:10:18 trafficking bill, the aspect 17:38:12:09 that most folks talk about when
17:38:13:24 they talk about amending is 17:38:15:06 streamlining the process and
17:38:16:09 getting those children out of 17:38:18:09 the country quicker or as soon
17:38:20:27 as possible. 17:38:21:27 Do you agree with that?
17:38:23:00 >> Well, I think what we have 17:38:24:03 right now is what we've learned
17:38:26:06 is that chaos and anarchy, that 17:38:29:03 is not compassionate.
17:38:30:00 I read an article the other day 17:38:31:24 where a human smuggler said
17:38:34:06 business is booming. 17:38:35:09 We should weep when see wee see
17:38:38:00 things like that. 17:38:39:12 This amendment to the act would
17:38:42:09 actually treat these children 17:38:44:15 with the compassion that they
17:38:46:00 deserve and I don't have kids, 17:38:48:12 but I can't imagine what it
17:38:49:15 would be like to be separated 17:38:52:03 from my children.
17:38:53:00 What we have right now is 17:38:53:27 anarchy.
17:38:54:21 >> Again, the 2008, call it 17:38:56:21 what you will, this particular
17:38:57:24 act, should it be amended to 17:39:00:03 streamline, deport, get these
17:39:03:18 children out of the country as 17:39:04:27 quickly as possible?
17:39:06:00 >> We should enforce the rule 17:39:06:27 of law, yes.
17:39:08:15 We should send children back to 17:39:10:21 their families where they came
17:39:12:21 from. 17:39:13:09 If we are a nation of laws as
17:39:15:06 we are, we have to enforce rule 17:39:17:00 of law.
17:39:17:15 >> But right now, the rule of 17:39:18:12 law says that these kids needs
17:39:20:12 hearings and those hearings can 17:39:22:09 drag on for a lot of people.
17:39:24:00 What people are saying 17:39:25:06 regarding a variety of methods,
17:39:26:21 make it quicker. 17:39:27:18 Do you agree?
17:39:28:24 >> Yes. 17:39:29:06 >> What happens to these
17:39:30:06 children? 17:39:30:18 Does it matter where they go?
17:39:32:15 Talk to us about the logistics 17:39:34:03 of something like this.
17:39:35:06 >> Let's talk about how they 17:39:36:15 came here to begin with.
17:39:37:24 We have a commander-in-chief 17:39:39:27 who has made it very clear to
17:39:41:09 central American countries that 17:39:42:06 we are open for children to
17:39:46:03 come here and that they can 17:39:47:12 come here and come to our
17:39:50:00 borders with no repercussions. 17:39:52:09 We have to enforce the rule of
17:39:54:09 law as it stands today. 17:39:56:06 Otherwise, we will be beyond
17:39:58:21 where we should be. 17:39:59:27 >> Should the deferred action
17:40:01:00 for childhood arrives, that 17:40:02:18 program be defunded?
17:40:04:09 >> Well, let me just say 17:40:06:09 specifically with regard to
17:40:09:00 overall immigration because I 17:40:09:24 think sometimes, we get into
17:40:10:21 the weeds. 17:40:11:15 This is not just an issue for
17:40:12:24 me. 17:40:13:03 This is real life.
17:40:13:27 I'm married to an immigrant. 17:40:15:12 Her parents came here legally
17:40:16:24 from Taiwan. 17:40:18:00 That was a very long process.
17:40:19:09 It took 15 years to get their 17:40:20:21 legal status.
17:40:21:12 Why is that? 17:40:22:00 My father-in-law has his
17:40:23:12 master's degree, should that be 17:40:24:27 the case?
17:40:25:18 The point is this is not a 17:40:27:00 political football for me.
17:40:28:06 I try to be very specific about 17:40:30:18 how we can expedite this
17:40:32:15 situation that we have going on 17:40:33:15 right now.
17:40:34:03 But I want people to know for 17:40:36:12 me, this is something that I
17:40:36:27 know very intimately and I'm 17:40:39:09 going to treat it as such.
17:40:41:06 >> Specifically, childhood 17:40:41:15 arrives, dreamers, in other
17:40:43:21 words. 17:40:44:27 Should that, first of all, the
17:40:45:24 deferred action plan, should it 17:40:47:12 be defunded, basically, what
17:40:49:03 I'm asking is should these 17:40:50:24 dreamers be immediately
17:40:51:18 deported? 17:40:52:18 >> Well, like I said, I'm
17:40:53:21 categorically opposed to 17:40:54:21 amnesty so I know the president
17:40:57:06 has taken executive action to 17:40:59:12 essentially take the deferred
17:41:01:00 action which you're talking 17:41:02:15 about, to allow the dreamers to
17:41:04:09 be here in the United States. 17:41:05:12 I oppose amnesty.
17:41:06:15 The first thing that we have to 17:41:07:15 do is secure the border and
17:41:08:21 then take a step-by-step 17:41:10:06 approach, that's the
17:41:11:12 responsible thing to do and 17:41:12:15 that's a very difficult thing
17:41:13:24 in and of itself, secure the 17:41:16:03 border has many different
17:41:17:18 components. 17:41:18:09 I'm not prepared to have that
17:41:21:00 discussion. 17:41:21:27 That's why we need to focus
17:41:23:00 like a laser. 17:41:24:15 >> Dreamers, do they need to be
17:41:25:24 immediately deported, what do 17:41:26:24 you think of the program?
17:41:28:18 >> We need to enforce the rule 17:41:29:15 of law and we need to secure
17:41:30:24 the border also. 17:41:32:09 >> Right now, they are here in
17:41:33:09 the country by executive order. 17:41:35:12 Again, that seems to be the
17:41:38:03 pattern now. 17:41:38:24 Do you agree with that?
17:41:40:03 >> I would not. 17:41:40:21 >> So you would immediately
17:41:42:00 deport these folks that are 17:41:44:21 born here.
17:41:45:15 >> We need to enforce the rule 17:41:47:15 of law.
17:41:48:18 >> You say, if the -- 17:41:50:27 >> What does that say, ted?
17:41:52:06 If we have an executive action 17:41:54:15 that allows people who weren't
17:41:58:15 supposed to be here to remain 17:41:59:18 here?
17:42:00:00 What does that say? 17:42:01:06 Where do we draw the line?
17:42:02:18 Are we not a nation of laws? 17:42:05:27 Are we going to selectively
17:42:07:18 enforce the law here and not 17:42:08:21 there?
17:42:09:09 We have to be consistent. 17:42:10:21 >> She said immediately deport
17:42:11:21 them. 17:42:12:09 I didn't get a straight answer
17:42:13:12 from you. 17:42:14:00 Do you think they should be
17:42:15:00 immediately deported? 17:42:16:06 >> I think we should enforce
17:42:17:12 the rule of law, but I also 17:42:19:00 think that the first step has
17:42:20:03 to be securing the border. 17:42:21:06 We have to arise 40% of the
17:42:22:24 people that are here illegally 17:42:24:06 came here legally and
17:42:25:03 overstayed their visas. 17:42:26:24 My point is very simple.
17:42:28:03 This is an incredibly complex 17:42:30:00 issue and that's why we need a
17:42:31:21 step-by-step approach to solve 17:42:33:09 it.
17:42:33:21 >> As far as securing the 17:42:36:15 border, define it.
17:42:38:03 What does it mean? 17:42:38:27 How do we know it's secure and
17:42:40:09 we can move on? 17:42:41:12 >> Many different components.
17:42:42:21 One part physical that has to 17:42:44:06 do with fencing, that has to do
17:42:45:21 with electronic surveillance. 17:42:47:12 Another part has to do with
17:42:49:03 boots on the ground. 17:42:50:00 And then there's the -- like I
17:42:52:18 said, earlier, 40% of the 17:42:54:09 people that came here legally
17:42:55:15 and overstayed visas, that's a 17:42:57:09 very complex component.
17:42:58:12 It has nothing -- it's not 17:42:59:24 just, it's not just the
17:43:01:21 southern border, everybody gets 17:43:03:09 focused on.
17:43:04:03 Our border with Mexico and 17:43:05:12 rightfully so because we are a
17:43:06:24 border state, but this is very, 17:43:08:12 very complex.
17:43:09:12 So from my standpoint I think 17:43:11:09 it's all of the above, let's
17:43:12:03 make it simple, let's make it 17:43:14:00 clear and then let's move from
17:43:15:09 there. 17:43:15:21 >> As far as a secure border,
17:43:16:18 we keep hearing securing the 17:43:18:00 border.
17:43:18:12 What defines a secure border? 17:43:20:00 >> Well, we'll know when
17:43:23:27 children stop coming 17:43:25:03 unaccompanied.
17:43:26:15 When the news in Central 17:43:27:27 America is that they will be
17:43:29:18 turned away and that the rule 17:43:31:00 of law will be enforced.
17:43:32:15 It is absolutely physically 17:43:34:21 capable of being accomplished.
17:43:37:12 And when that word gets out, 17:43:39:24 and when families know that if
17:43:42:03 they come to our border, they 17:43:43:24 will not penetrate that border,
17:43:45:18 that's when we know it will be 17:43:46:24 secure.
17:43:49:15 >> The upper chamber has 17:43:51:00 already passed an immigration
17:43:52:18 bill. 17:43:53:03 If you were in the house and
17:43:53:24 you were presented with that 17:43:54:24 bill, how would you vote?
17:43:56:18 >> I want to make sure that it 17:43:58:15 includes securing the border
17:44:01:06 first. 17:44:03:00 >> No, comprehensive
17:44:03:21 immigration reform? 17:44:04:15 >> So basically, you're saying
17:44:05:09 if they want 700-mile border 17:44:07:03 fence, if you want 20,000
17:44:08:18 border agents added, if you 17:44:09:24 want increased funding for
17:44:11:03 securing the border, is that 17:44:12:09 enough of a start?
17:44:13:12 Or nothing until your 17:44:15:03 definition of a secure border
17:44:16:18 exists? 17:44:17:15 >> We must secure the border.
17:44:18:27 So whatever it takes, cost-wise 17:44:22:03 and I know that that is a
17:44:23:27 constant changing target. 17:44:25:18 The point is political will.
17:44:28:21 Unless the house has political 17:44:30:00 will and then that then passes
17:44:32:15 the Senate, it's a moot point. 17:44:34:27 The only way we can secure the
17:44:36:12 border is to get both houses of 17:44:38:27 Congress to agree to secure the
17:44:42:24 border. 17:44:43:06 It is not the situation of
17:44:44:06 being physically incapable of 17:44:45:27 doing it.
17:44:46:15 It is a political will 17:44:47:27 situation.
17:44:49:00 >> If the speaker presented the 17:44:50:09 Senate bill to you in the
17:44:52:03 house, how would you vote on 17:44:53:03 it?
17:44:55:06 >> I'm running for Congress to 17:44:56:00 be a part of the process.
17:44:57:03 Right now, I'm not part of the 17:44:58:06 process.
17:44:58:24 That's very frustrating to me. 17:45:00:12 That's why I'm here.
17:45:01:27 That's why I'm running. 17:45:03:03 So I'm not going to speak to
17:45:04:27 whether or not I would vote for 17:45:05:21 the bill that came over from
17:45:06:27 the Senate. 17:45:07:18 I know there's been 300 bills
17:45:09:06 passed from the house that deal 17:45:11:00 with economic freedom and
17:45:12:21 growing our economy that are 17:45:13:21 now sitting in harry Reid's
17:45:15:09 desk. 17:45:15:21 Do we have a crisis right now?
17:45:17:06 We do. 17:45:17:24 Does it need to be addressed
17:45:18:24 today? 17:45:19:09 It does.
17:45:19:21 but I'm running in order to be 17:45:22:03 a part of the solution.
17:45:22:27 >> Okay. 17:45:23:15 Let's move on here.
17:45:25:09 Should the house initiate 17:45:27:15 impeachment proceedings against
17:45:29:09 the president? 17:45:30:12 >> Not at this point.
17:45:31:09 >> Because? 17:45:33:09 >> It requires high crimes and
17:45:36:12 misdemeanors. 17:45:37:06 I would have to be convince
17:45:40:03 that that were the case? 17:45:42:27 >> What do you think?
17:45:43:18 >> I think that's the 17:45:44:06 appropriate course of action.
17:45:45:09 Look when we talked about the 17:45:47:09 affordable care act and
17:45:48:27 Obamacare and shutting down the 17:45:50:03 government, my approach would
17:45:51:03 have been very simple. 17:45:52:09 I would have in order to get
17:45:53:18 change out of Congress, you 17:45:55:15 essentially remove the ability
17:45:56:27 for them to exempt themselves 17:45:58:09 from the very laws that they
17:45:59:18 passed so I would have removed 17:46:00:24 that exemption for members of
17:46:03:03 Congress and their staff. 17:46:04:06 You would have seen change so
17:46:05:09 quickly. 17:46:05:21 So my point in saying this is
17:46:08:00 that we have the power of the 17:46:10:09 purse of the house, and I think
17:46:11:06 that's the appropriate approach 17:46:12:18 to getting anything done.
17:46:13:15 >> So not necessarily 17:46:14:15 impeachment?
17:46:15:18 >> Correct. 17:46:15:21 >> Okay.
17:46:16:24 Let's talk about the Tea Party. 17:46:18:18 Talk about the Tea Party, your
17:46:19:27 relationship with it. 17:46:21:00 Are you a member of the Tea
17:46:22:15 Party, do you support Tea Party 17:46:24:09 principles?
17:46:25:21 >> I'm not a member of the Tea 17:46:26:12 Party.
17:46:26:21 The Tea Party is an essential 17:46:28:12 component of the conversation.
17:46:30:27 The Republican party, all 17:46:33:06 components, have come on board
17:46:34:21 to support me. 17:46:36:00 I'm a Wendy Rogers Republican
17:46:39:09 and when I say that, I have a 17:46:41:15 special background that no one
17:46:44:09 else has, having served my 17:46:46:15 country, having been and still
17:46:48:15 am a business owner, a mother, 17:46:50:24 a grandmother.
17:46:51:24 I'm my own person. 17:46:53:09 And what that means is when I
17:46:55:18 go to Congress, I will find 17:46:57:15 people who are like minded with
17:46:59:06 me who share my values of 17:47:02:12 American exceptionalism, of
17:47:05:15 getting government out of the 17:47:06:12 way, of small business.
17:47:09:03 So that business can create 17:47:10:15 jobs.
17:47:12:21 Of knowing the value of life. 17:47:15:03 Those are the kinds of values
I 17:47:17:09 stand for.
17:47:17:27 If the Tea Party supports those 17:47:19:06 values, then they support me.
17:47:21:03 >> Tea Party member, Tea Party 17:47:22:15 supporter, what do you think?
17:47:23:18 >> Well, what the Tea Party 17:47:28:03 stands for is the fact that
17:47:29:21 we're overtaxed, overregulated, 17:47:31:21 burdened by an overreaching
17:47:33:24 federal government, count me 17:47:35:06 among their numbers.
17:47:36:15 This is an area of distinction 17:47:37:15 between myself and Wendy.
17:47:38:24 Apparently, I guess you're not 17:47:39:24 proud to be a part of a
17:47:41:18 conservative movement. 17:47:42:27 I am.
17:47:43:24 I have folks who have endorsed 17:47:45:03 me from the liberty movement,
17:47:46:12 conservatives. 17:47:46:24 I have a broad coalition as
17:47:48:06 well and I don't run from any 17:47:50:18 of these people.
17:47:51:03 I embrace folks who want to 17:47:52:21 shrink the size of government
17:47:53:18 and grow our economy, create 17:47:56:15 economic prosperity for
17:47:57:24 millions of Americans, why 17:47:58:21 don't you?
17:47:59:12 I certainly count myself among 17:48:00:24 the people that want to do
17:48:02:06 that, balance our budget. 17:48:03:12 That's one of the reasons why
17:48:04:12 going back to specifics, I have 17:48:05:24 supported and I'll always
17:48:06:27 support a balanced budget 17:48:08:15 amendment to the Constitution
17:48:10:09 that will tie future Congress' 17:48:11:27 hand.
17:48:12:09 That's a step in the right 17:48:13:06 direction.
17:48:13:15 I also believe in term limits. 17:48:15:18 Last point the reason why I
17:48:16:18 believe in term limits is 17:48:17:24 because this was never meant to
17:48:18:21 be a profession. 17:48:19:12 I know you've run and lost
17:48:21:03 multiple times since I was 17:48:22:03 playing for the Oakland
17:48:22:27 raiders, but the point is this 17:48:24:18 isn't meant to be a career.
17:48:25:27 I'm the only one in this 17:48:26:24 campaign that believes in term
17:48:27:24 limits. 17:48:29:18 >> A response?
17:48:30:09 >> I meet our payroll every two 17:48:31:18 weeks.
17:48:32:09 My husband is the last one to 17:48:35:21 take the job.
17:48:36:15 We take care of our employees. 17:48:38:06 We've created jobs for 17
17:48:40:12 years. 17:48:42:00 I know what being overtaxed is.
17:48:44:27 I know what being overregulated 17:48:47:03 is.
17:48:47:24 And I know what trying to 17:48:49:21 conduct business in a litigious
17:48:54:03 environment is like. 17:48:55:27 I know how these laws hurt the
17:49:03:03 market and what this country, 17:49:06:03 this American exceptionalism is
17:49:07:27 all about. 17:49:08:21 I know that.
17:49:09:21 I live it every day. 17:49:11:09 And as for having run twice
17:49:13:21 before, I'm not a quitter. 17:49:15:24 And many people, including
17:49:20:24 Abraham Lincoln, ran multiple 17:49:22:24 times, before being elected
17:49:26:15 because it is one thing to run 17:49:29:09 and serve one's country.
17:49:31:06 It's another thing to have a 17:49:33:15 career not work out and then
17:49:35:15 wake up the next morning and 17:49:37:12 decide to run for Congress.
17:49:38:18 >> Let's get to some of the -- 17:49:39:24 >> Was that a veiled shot at
17:49:40:27 the fact that I'm not playing 17:49:42:00 in the NFL anymore?
17:49:43:03 Is that what your point was? 17:49:45:18 You're silent, I'll take that
17:49:47:00 was exactly -- 17:49:48:03 >> Answer.
17:49:50:15 >> I'll go ahead and take the 17:49:52:12 opportunity --
17:49:53:12 >> You asked me a question. 17:49:54:27 >> May I answer it?
17:49:56:03 >> Was that a shot at the 17:49:57:00 playing days?
17:49:57:21 >> It was a commentary on the 17:50:00:00 fact that running for Congress
17:50:02:00 is not something that can be 17:50:04:15 capriciously decided in a
17:50:07:03 moment. 17:50:07:15 >> So you're judging my
17:50:08:12 character now? 17:50:09:03 >> You know what?
17:50:12:00 Character does matter. 17:50:13:03 >> Take that as a yes.
17:50:14:24 That's very dangerous. 17:50:17:18 [ Overlapping Speakers ]
17:50:18:03 >> That's a slippery slope. 17:50:20:06 >> This is personal.
17:50:21:24 This is character. 17:50:22:12 >> You attacking my character?
17:50:24:03 [ Overlapping Speakers ] 17:50:24:12 I'm glad you brought that up.
17:50:26:21 >> To represent -- 17:50:28:03 >> On top of attacking my
17:50:29:00 character, which I think is 17:50:30:12 completely out of bounds, you
17:50:32:21 have also said that I've broken 17:50:34:09 the law.
17:50:35:06 >> You have. 17:50:35:27 >> This is something that Wendy
17:50:37:18 sent out that said I flat out 17:50:39:00 broke the law, campaign finance
17:50:40:09 laws. 17:50:41:03 That is, in fact, inaccurate
17:50:42:18 and just so that, you know, to 17:50:45:12 do you a favor, I have brought
17:50:47:18 with me the actual directly 17:50:52:12 from the federal government's
17:50:53:15 we see that says, I'll fly this 17:50:56:21 to you that says, this is just
17:50:59:24 an example of the type of 17:51:00:24 negative campaign that you have
17:51:02:03 run. 17:51:02:21 >> May I respond.
17:51:03:15 >> Very quickly, she needs to 17:51:04:15 be able to respond.
17:51:05:21 >> I need a little more than 17:51:06:24 just a quick response so
17:51:08:15 please. 17:51:09:15 >> Where is your financial
17:51:10:18 disclosure statements for 2014 17:51:12:18 with the house ethics?
17:51:14:24 >> I filed an extension, thank 17:51:15:24 you for asking.
17:51:16:21 >> I didn't see it. 17:51:17:18 The deadline was May 15th,
17:51:20:12 it's not posted. 17:51:21:15 >> Indeed that's why I filed an
17:51:23:12 extension. 17:51:23:21 >> It's not there.
17:51:24:24 >> Attention to detail, this is 17:51:25:18 a very important point and this
17:51:26:24 is what I wanted to talk about. 17:51:28:03 Attention to detail, we're
17:51:30:03 going to make news. 17:51:31:15 We're going to make news right
17:51:32:12 now because in the history of 17:51:33:18 Arizona politics, you're going
17:51:34:21 to see for the first time one 17:51:36:27 competitor help out another.
17:51:38:00 It's come to my attention and 17:51:39:24 the attention of my campaign
17:51:40:27 that you are in violation of 17:51:42:18 federal campaign finance laws
17:51:44:18 and let me just show you how 17:51:46:27 you need to fix that.
17:51:48:09 This is something that is just 17:51:50:09 kind of comical so right here,
17:51:52:21 this is your name, you 17:51:53:27 misspelled your name.
17:51:55:18 It says -- it means every piece 17:51:59:27 of literature or hate mail that
17:52:01:24 you send out regarding me, that 17:52:03:03 is something that is against
17:52:04:12 federal law. 17:52:05:06 So you know what, again, I am
17:52:06:27 just here to help. 17:52:08:09 I am just here to be a very
17:52:11:12 magnanimous individual. 17:52:13:18 I'm here to help you.
17:52:14:27 >> Go ahead. 17:52:15:24 >> We have put in a correction
17:52:17:18 to the federal election 17:52:20:00 commission several times on the
17:52:21:06 misspelling of Wendy, which is 17:52:23:18 W-E-N-D-Y.
17:52:25:21 Secondly, Mr. Walter has not 17:52:28:12 filed an extension.
17:52:30:03 We called Washington yesterday 17:52:32:09 and they said they did not have
17:52:33:12 it. 17:52:33:24 >> Completely not true.
17:52:35:00 >> Before we get out of here, 17:52:38:00 there are a couple of things
17:52:38:21 that each one of you have 17:52:41:06 attacked each other on.
17:52:42:06 I need quick responses here. 17:52:43:12 Why should Republican voters
17:52:44:18 trust your business instincts, 17:52:47:21 home went into foreclosure,
17:52:49:06 walked away from a mortgage, 17:52:50:09 you got a business degree, you
17:52:52:15 had some experience in banking, 17:52:53:24 why should they trust you after
17:52:55:03 that incident? 17:52:56:09 >> Absolutely because you're
17:52:57:06 not going to be able to vote 17:52:58:00 for a perfect candidate in this
17:52:59:15 election. 17:53:00:00 You know, the beauty of my
17:53:02:15 campaign and what I stand for 17:53:04:00 is I'm accountable for all my
17:53:05:24 actions. 17:53:06:18 Good and bad.
17:53:07:24 Touchdowns, interceptions, I 17:53:10:03 don't make excuses for them.
17:53:11:21 I am accountable for them. 17:53:12:27 But just like anybody else,
17:53:14:09 make a mistake in life you 17:53:15:15 learn from it and you move
17:53:16:27 forward. 17:53:17:09 That's exactly what I'm all
17:53:18:09 about and in part, I'm glad 17:53:21:03 some of the bad things have
17:53:21:24 happened to me in the past 17:53:22:18 because it's made me the person
17:53:23:27 that I am today. 17:53:24:18 I can relate with that person
17:53:25:21 who's had the moving truck 17:53:27:15 outside of their home.
17:53:29:00 It can never be said about me 17:53:31:27 you've lived a cushy life.
17:53:33:21 That's so far from the truth. 17:53:34:24 >> You walked away from a
17:53:36:09 mortgage when you could pay, 17:53:38:15 but you didn't think anyone was
17:53:39:27 looking and you admitted that 17:53:41:15 you would not have done it had
17:53:43:00 you known you were going to run 17:53:44:06 for Congress.
17:53:44:27 That's why character matters. 17:53:47:06 What else will you do in
17:53:48:06 Congress when no one's looking? 17:53:49:27 >> Respond, please.
17:53:51:15 >> Again, she's attacking my 17:53:53:00 character, trying to impugn my
17:53:54:24 judgment. 17:53:55:21 I have already pointed out the
17:54:00:09 facts that you're running a 17:54:01:09 vicious, personal attack
17:54:04:06 campaign. 17:54:05:09 >> Do you deny that?
17:54:07:06 Do you deny that you walked 17:54:09:09 away from your mortgage?
17:54:10:18 >> The fact that you say that, 17:54:11:27 you keep your promises and I
17:54:14:09 believe that, that's why when 17:54:15:15 you said you would eliminate
17:54:17:00 Social Security, I believe 17:54:17:15 that's exactly what you'll do
17:54:19:15 and that's troubling to me. 17:54:20:15 Why?
17:54:21:00 Because that affects millions 17:54:22:03 of people just like my
17:54:23:09 grandparents, as opposed to my 17:54:26:00 situation.
17:54:26:12 >> Let's get to this, did you 17:54:27:21 not say in 2012 that you would
17:54:29:09 phase out Social Security? 17:54:30:09 >> I did not.
17:54:31:15 >> You did not say that? 17:54:32:18 >> I did not say that.
17:54:33:24 I said Social Security is not 17:54:37:03 constitutionally guaranteed was
17:54:39:18 how I answered that question. 17:54:41:00 And what that means is
17:54:43:00 tomorrow, Congress with the 17:54:45:24 swipe of a pen could do away
17:54:47:12 with the money in Social 17:54:48:03 Security if it wanted to.
17:54:52:03 So what is important is to send 17:54:54:12 someone to Congress who will
17:54:55:18 protect Social Security. 17:54:57:09 I have said that publicly many
17:54:59:03 times. 17:54:59:18 >> So in front of a Tea Party
17:55:00:24 audience, you did not claim 17:55:02:12 that you would phase out Social
17:55:03:27 Security? 17:55:04:06 >> I did not say that I would
17:55:06:15 phase out Social Security. 17:55:08:00 What I said was Social Security
17:55:10:21 is not constitutionally 17:55:12:00 guaranteed.
17:55:13:03 That's the sense in which I 17:55:14:12 answered that question.
17:55:15:12 >> Very quickly. 17:55:16:27 >> I feel like I should take
17:55:18:12 the rope. 17:55:19:03 It's unbelievable.
17:55:20:12 Look, don't take my word for 17:55:23:00 it.
17:55:23:12 Go to 17:55:23:21 www.therealWendyRogers.com.
17:55:28:03 You can see the video for 17:55:29:06 yourself.
17:55:31:18 My background playing in the 17:55:33:00 NFL, the eye in the sky doesn't
17:55:34:15 lie. 17:55:34:24 When you make a mistake or
17:55:36:12 something successful, you see 17:55:37:15 it.
17:55:39:09 See the video for yourself. 17:55:41:21 >> We do have to stop it right
17:55:43:00 there. 17:55:43:12 Each candidate will give a
17:55:44:21 one-minute closing statement 17:55:45:21 and going in reverse order of
17:55:47:00 the opening remarks, we start 17:55:48:27 with Andrew Walter.
17:55:51:24 >> Thank you for the 17:55:52:12 opportunity to visit with you
17:55:53:09 this evening. 17:55:53:21 Look I think you can learn a
17:55:54:27 lot about somebody by how they 17:55:56:12 conduct their campaign.
17:55:57:12 From day one, my campaign has 17:55:59:12 been all about the issues,
17:56:01:00 focusing on the issues because 17:56:02:24 that's what matters most.
17:56:05:27 How is the average family in 17:56:07:06 Arizona doing?
17:56:07:27 Is it easier to provide for 17:56:08:27 their kids, put food on the
17:56:10:18 table or is it more difficult? 17:56:12:06 What about the price of
17:56:13:18 college? 17:56:14:00 Is that up or down?
17:56:15:00 What about the price for 17:56:15:27 healthcare?
17:56:16:18 Actually today, fewer people 17:56:18:03 have health insurance than
17:56:19:06 before Obamacare was passed 17:56:20:24 into law.
17:56:21:27 We're going in the wrong 17:56:22:27 direction.
17:56:23:15 The oldest definition of 17:56:24:27 insanity is continuing to do
17:56:26:21 something the same and expect a
17:56:28:27 different result. 17:56:29:18 Now is the time to send
17:56:31:15 somebody to Washington has a 17:56:32:15 unique, fresh perspective who
17:56:33:24 is going to be a fighter and 17:56:35:06 will offer bold vision for the
17:56:37:18 future, but I won't be there 17:56:39:12 forever because I believe in
17:56:40:24 serving my community for a 17:56:42:00 short period of time and coming
17:56:43:12 home. 17:56:44:00 If that's the type of person
17:56:45:06 that you can support, I need 17:56:46:03 your help.
17:56:46:24 >> All right, thank you very 17:56:47:12 much and Wendy Rogers now with
17:56:49:12 her closing remarks. 17:56:51:15 >> You will receive your ballot
17:56:53:00 in the mail any day now to vote 17:56:55:03 for Congress.
17:56:56:18 I, Wendy Rogers, ask you for 17:56:58:18 that vote.
17:56:59:12 I've been a leader, I've been a
17:57:01:12 business owner. 17:57:02:00 and I am a parent and a
17:57:03:24 grandparent. 17:57:04:27 My opponent has refused in many
17:57:07:27 ways to admit his shortfalls in 17:57:10:21 character, in business, in his
17:57:13:03 financial dealings. 17:57:15:00 Character matters.
17:57:16:09 We have had too much corruption 17:57:19:21 in Washington, D.C.
17:57:21:15 What happens in Washington 17:57:22:27 comes to roost here at home.
17:57:25:18 I ask for your vote, I ask you 17:57:28:15 to go to www.WendyRogers.org.
17:57:31:15 Thank you. 17:57:32:00 >> All right.
17:57:32:27 Thank you, candidates. 17:57:33:21 And thank you for watching this
17:57:35:12 special vote 2014 debate 17:57:37:00 featuring the Republican
17:57:37:21 candidates for congressional 17:57:38:21 district nine.
