This is our second annual Iron Chef competition, where
students actually participate against each other.
We're Lovin' in the Oven.
We're cooking a sweet and spicy orange chicken sauce,
and then we're also making an orange rice and an
Asian snow pea slaw.
Tonight we had a total of six contestants, three teams of
two, that had actually won from previous rounds that we
had conducted.
Team Cacao.
We're making curried quinoa with tofu scramble and chopped
vegetables.
We put a lot of pressure on them.
We have them cook right in front of everybody under a
time constraint of an hour.
And we put a lot of expectations that they're
going to use these secret ingredients.
We are Live Free or Pie.
We're cooking a grilled chicken with a orange juice
soy sauce beurre blanc, over a garlic, spinach and orange
zested rice.
It's really about showcasing some amazing talent right here
on campus with the students.
I think the competition is making really beautiful
dishes, and I'm actually a little bit nervous.
But Team Live Free or Pie gave us a handshake beforehand, so
we know it's pretty good sportsmanship here tonight.
Win, lose or draw, we're having a great time.
And it's great that anyone could sign up for it, everyone
can do it, and lots of fun.
I love it, it tastes really good.
So, I'm just excited to be here.
So we have a tofu scramble that was marinated in curry
powder and other spices, as well as ginger and garlic.
We have quinoa, and then we have this Swiss chard braised
in the Minute Maid orange juice.
For a vegetarian entree, it's good.
Nutritionally, that scored very high.
I think when they prepared it the first time
they used a red quinoa.
I thought it added a little better appearance.
It's a pan-fried chicken, it's seared in a sesame oil glaze
with a little bit of orange cognac.
The sauce is a orange soy sauce reduction with plum
sauce sambal, it's pretty spicy.
I thought it was excellent.
It was really good.
The slaw is crispy, and it has really good flavor.
It's got fresh pineapple and fresh cilantro in there, all
kinds of good stuff happening.
And all the flavors work really well together.
We prepared for you tonight a pan-fried chicken with an
orange soy sauce beurre blanc.
So you've got the top of a combination of orange-dusted
rice, with orange, ginger, spinach and
toasted macadamia nuts.
Delicious.
Really good.
Chicken was very tender, had a lot of flavor, could cut it
with a fork.
I really like that chicken, probably my favorite protein.
I really like the beurre blanc that they applied
to that, very good.
Knowing how I cooked back in college, and what I see come
in front of me as a judge is just amazing, the talent these
students have. And they love it.
So in third place, with 361 total points, is team Cacao.
[APPLAUSE]
Congratulations.
In second place, with 381 total points, is
Lovin' in the Oven.
[APPLAUSE]
[INAUDIBLE]
Live Free or Pie, with a total of 390 points.
Congratulations [INAUDIBLE].
Unbelievable.
I mean, the whole event itself is fun, winning is just a
little bonus for the end.
We had a great time the whole time.
Oh yeah, it was lots of fun, and they should definitely
keep doing this every year.
It was awesome to do this, and they should maybe
try to make it bigger.
And I'm sure more people want to compete in this.
