There is no typical day as a risk manager in Ulster Bank.
My department within the bank is Regulatory Risk and we're the point of contact with the regulator for the business. I'm basically the in-between the
regulator and the corporate side of the whole of the bank.
My role helps the bank in that we're a function that sit in head office and we make sure that the staff that are on the front line are doing their role correctly
and they have the right tools to be able to do their role. They do look at us as if we’re protecting them as well.
You need to be patient and allow the business time to understand what is it you’re trying to tell them because sometimes it's a lot of risk jargon and they
might not necessarily understand it.
Well my role you get to see all the elements of the bank you get to see it from a business point and you also get to see it from the regulators point which is
also protecting the customer and making sure the sales are right so the role itself is extremely varied.
Honesty matters a lot to me, they could be my mum or dad walking into the branch buying that product or whatever the customers… I definitely want them taken care
of properly.
In some ways my job is the conscience of the bank. Ulster Bank are very good for work-life balance, the evenings are my own.
The similarities between my job and the gym is that you have to be disciplined and focused and basically manage your time well so you get the end result that
you want. The exercise bike gives me time to put on some music and just go into my own little world.
I'm Ciara Hanrahan, I'm 28 and I’m the regulatory risk manager at Ulster Bank.
