What better way to secure your dream job than to actually create it yourself and get it
funded yourself? I have a background in social work in New York City. I've been working with
survivors of sex trafficking for about 10 years. There is a new law in the State of
Maryland that allows survivors of sex trafficking who have prostitution convictions on their
record to actually vacate those convictions. The law is newly passed in Maryland, but nobody
had been using it, so my project will be focused on actually implementing that law--it's kind
of a three-tiered system that I've developed. I'll be providing representation to survivors
who have convictions on their records here in the State of Maryland generally, but Baltimore
City specifically. I'll also be developing a training program and training attorneys
within the state who want to volunteer their time to help survivors of trafficking vacate
their convictions. In exchange for my training, they'll be put on kind of a master list to
take these cases pro bono as they occur, which basically allows the project to continue long
after my two-year fellowship is up.
