Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan sworn in. The recently elected head of state, who
previously had served as acting president when his predecessor, Umaru Yar'Adua, passed
away, was inaugurated on Sunday, May 29. The ceremony was attended by thousands of invited
guests that included African leaders from Zimbabwe, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), South
Africa, Uganda, Liberia, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In his inaugural address,
President Jonathan pledged to uphold democracy and unite Nigerians as he stated, “My fellow
countrymen and women, Nigeria is not only (a) land of promise but it shall be a country
where positive change shall continue to take place for the good of our people... In every
decision, I shall always place the common good before all ends."
Your Excellency President Jonathan, we respectfully congratulate your term in office. Wishing
