Ok in this segment I want to cover hitting the ball from the side. Most players, when
you watch the good players at the high level, Darren if you could step back a second over
there, they hit the ball from the side, forehand and backhand. So on a two handed back hand
you'll hit it right there, on your one handed backhand a little bit out there, but you're
to the side of the ball, much as when you watch a baseball hitter hit the ball. They
do not hit the ball into themselves. A lot of players in tennis have the ball too close
to themselves, they hit it too far in front of themselves, there's times when that is
unavoidable, but the ideal shot is generally from the side of the ball. So, this segment
we're going to show the forehand from the side. So Darren I want you to straddle the
baseline, ok, and I'm going to throw the ball right at the baseline, and I want you to hit
it. Ok, so you see that that's right in his power zone. If I throw the ball here, now
don't move, I want you to hit the ball there, you see how that's a much weaker shot, and
if it's too far back, go ahead. You can do certain things, hitting the ball too far back,
and too far front, but generally your best, most accurate shot, your most powerful shot,
your most mechanically sound shot is right at the side. Right there. So you can see the
body turns, gets full power, full weight transfer through the ball. So, if you want to get a
good shot the idea is, let's say this is the shot right here. So Darren I want you to kind
of scoot around, and I'm going to drop it, and hit the ball from the side. So ready,
set, go. Scoot around, so let's try that again. So I want you to hit it right in your power
zone. Move, move, move, good. So you see how he hit the ball from his middle. So that's
about where you want to hit the ball every time.
