>> Hauling around extra pounds can take a huge toll on children's health, putting them
at an increased risk for a lot of health problems. In tonight's "Building Blocks", we look at
a weight management program that helps kids live a healthy lifestyle.
>> Jazmin Saunders: Well, before I wasn't physically active really. I was more so come
home, get someting to eat, sit on the couch, do homework, go to sleep kind of thing.
>> Wanting to get healthy, 13-year-old Jazmin Saunders and her parents decided to get help
through the pediatric weight management program at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The
focus on diet and exercise.
>> Yeah, I'm going to check your weight and height.
>> Jazmin Saunders: First, it was hard to find snacks that were, like, low calorie because
I wasn't used to looking -
>> The program teaches Jazmin to eat three meals a day but smaller portions. She eats
fewer snacks and makes sure each is under 100 calories.
>> The fruits and the vegetables are the best snacks that are out there, but other dairy
products such as mozzarella cheese sticks, yogurt, pudding cups that have the milk in
them in terms of the dairy is great. Also nuts are very good. So not too many.
>> Jazmin is also more physically active, working out for 60 minutes a day seven days
a week.
>> Jazmin Saunders: I can run faster now and at longer time period. I don't have to, I'm
not wheezing or, like, breathing heavily after I get done running -
>> Jazmin's parents, crucial in helping her achieve her goals -
>> - But as our children, we're the ones that supplying the food for them -
>> They need support. They need that -
>> Yeah -
>> Support -
>> Jazmin Saunders: You can do it. I mean, I did it, and I, I was thinking, you know,
there's no way I can run for an hour and then not be completely out of breath, but, you
know, I did.
>> And so far Jazmin has lost over ten pounds. At the advice of her doctor, she's also cut
out most sodas and juices and instead drinks mostly water and milk.
