In this video we will compare the three best Kamado brands on the market, the Big Green
Egg, Primo, and the Grill Dome. There are several factors that are important
as you compare Kamado style grills: size, weight, lid assist mechanisms, variety of
accessories available, and color.
First, you want to consider size and weight, and what your particular needs are for this
grill. Several brands offer smaller, more portable
units, which weigh about 100Lbs. These are great for smaller get togethers, camping and
tailgaiting. The most popular size for most kamados is
the "large" size, like the Grill Dome and BGE; seen here.
Kamados in this class weigh about 150Lbs. These are great for standard backyard grilling,
and can accomodate larger groups. On the BGE you can fit about 10 quarter pound
hamburgers comfortably. Several companies offer extra larger versions.
Check out one of my personal favorites, the Primo XL-Oval.
Kamados in this class weigh about two hundred pounds and they can handle big parties and
larger cuts of meat. The Primo XL's shape even allows you to cook
up to 12 to 14 whole racks of ribs. Now lets have a look at the lid assist mechanisms:
The Grill Dome's assist is constructed of stainless steel, the large Big Green Egg comes
standard, with a black powder coated lid assist, and Primo uses a black powder coated assist
with a safety self locking mechanism. Now lets talk about accessories.
For large size kamados several standard accessories exist, and they are: an accessory for setting
up your kamado for indirect cooking, pizza stones for baking pizza, grill extenders for
giving you extra grill space, and ash tools for removing ashes from the firebox.
When you step up to the extra large size kamados, a multitude of accessories becomes available,
some of the most popular include: ceramic heat deflecting plates to set up for indirect
cooking, grill extender racks, ceramic pizza stones for baking pizza, drip pan rack holders,
and One of the most unique accessories is the cast iron firebox divider for the Primo
XL-Oval, which allows you to cook with, up to 3 different heat zones at one time.
When comparing Kamado color choices, it's pretty straight forward: the popular Big Green
Egg, comes in the green color that you see here, Primo kamado, comes in the slate black
that you see here, and the Grill Dome comes in five different colors; blue, red, green,
black, and copper.
