1- Why did you decide to study the International Master in Sport Management?
I graduated from Computer Science 22 years ago, and I had a lot of expectations to improve my academic formation. I had participated in speeches, studies, seminars, but I never applied for a Master but I was looking for it.
I think my preparation has improved significantly and I am happy with everything I have learned. I feel it was the right decision to take and it is going to be useful in a future.
2- Was it difficult to combine the e-MISM with your personal life?
Not at all! This was one of the best things because doing it online meant I could adapt the course to my working hours.
Sometimes I could study at 10pm, at 7am or at noon, but always committed to the time I could use for the tasks and study, which were quite reasonable. The content was really good.
3- How would you value the interaction with your classmates?
Really, really good because it was something intercultural: we would relate to people from other countries. People from other countries we had previously met at the Institute visited us in Ecuador and so we could exchange ideas.
The topic of the classes and the tutors were really good – when you go to the university you are just a student in this class, but here it’s something individual, not only with the group work, but the tutor would give personal guidelines.
That’s what I really liked about the course.
4- In what way has the e-MISM contributed to your future?
It has contributed to my present, in the way I see and understand things. We have seen the world’s history in the recent years, how it has developed and which are the trends and where do these lead.
This has helped me in my current job, and I feel I have been able to change and correct several things. Learning is something that must be continuous, and one has to learn all the time,
and most important is, not only what you learn but what you can do with this knowledge. I’m sure this is going to help me to be a better person.
5- Do you think sports people should manage the world of sports?
To be part of the sport management one has to have a passion for sports but always accompanied by professionalism, knowledge and approach, and that is what we have learnt here.
This passion, together with the management of strategy and administration, is a sporting achievement, not a question of luck. Luck exists, but it reaches to the one who works hard and is ready to receive it.
6- Do you think athletes should worry more about their future?
I believe current athletes are not like in our parents’ time. Previously, athletes received an amount of money for the love of the sport – they played because they liked it.
This type of courses have to be attended while the athlete is active; this is the time when the athlete earns money and must understand how to invest it, what to do with the resources and what could happen the day of tomorrow.
It is a short race, money cannot be wasted every month and this may happen if there is no previous formation.
Many of the athletes go from earning little money to a lot more throughout their career, and they may think that they will earn a lot more, but sometimes this is not the case, so the athlete must be prepared.
The moment is now, not later. If time already passed by, prepare now, but it is best while the athlete is playing.
