With its own economic concerns rising from the weeks-long conflict in neighboring South
Sudan, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir met with his South Sudanese counterpart in the
South Sudanese city of Juba on Monday. Sudanese officials say the two leaders began
talks on deploying joint forces to the oil-rich regions in South Sudan, much of which have
been seized by rebels loyal to former South Sudanese vice president Riek Machar.
While the southern state claimed most of the region's oilfields after the decades-long
Sudanese civil war, it uses pipelines in the north to export oil.
The near month-long conflict between factions of President Salva Kiir and his former deputy
has left at least 1-thousand people dead and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.
