What's up friends? Welcome to Epic Tutorials Best iPhone & iPad Apps for Students in 2013.
You will find links to all ten apps featured below in the description so if you like the
look of something just click the link and it will open in the App Store for you. You
will also find chapter links so feel free to jump straight to the relevant section.
Now despite what you might think, the key to excelling in your studies is not the regular
planning, scheduling and time management skills which will help you stay on top of all those
classes, assignments and exams and the app best suited to helping you do this is: iStudiez
Pro which will run on your iPhone and iPad without having to buy it twice and is also
available for your Mac.
This app lets you enter your semester start and end dates, then your classes and exams
which you can set to be recurring, the class location, teacher info and all your assignments.
You can even assign a partner to an assignment if doing group work and doing so will give
you detailed information on the person responsible for your failure, for you to deal with at
a later date.
If you enable Sync under settings your info will be up to date across all devices at all
times, and you can even select your preferred grading scale including percentage or fail
through to high distinction depending on your institutions preference.
Once you start completing assignments, tap the exclamation icon to mark it as done and
enter your grades. If using HD-F as your grading scale iStudiez will automatically convert
your numerical value into the relevant grade. It has a huge range of additional features
making this one of the best apps for students.
Next up we have the app GoodReader And whilst billed as a super robust PDF reader
by its developers, this app is so much more. It's one of the most powerful file management
tools on the iPad allowing you to connect to a huge range of servers including your
schools mac or windows file servers over AFP and SMB allowing to access your networked
account if you have one. It also supports FTP as well as a huge range of online services
including Dropbox, Google Drive and SkyDrive.
GoodReader also features one of the best PDF annotation tools around allowing you scribble,
highlight and add text and also supports the viewing and editing of your most used document
types including word, excel, iWork and supports the playback of audio and video files.
This app even supports WI-Fi sharing which means you can easily send files from your
laptop to your iPad through your computers browser so long as they are both connected
to the same network. It does a hundred other cool things we don't have time to cover so
make sure you don't go back to school without it.
Keynote Whether your in high school or university,
chances are your going to have to give presentations so instead of being the awkward mature age
student attempting to read from a dozen sheets of hand written notes, get Apples incredible
Keynote app and go Steve Jobs on their ***.
This app features most of the powerful desktop features we know and love and comes with a
nice range of templates. It features advanced controls for custom builds and animation and
allows you to import custom templates from your computer.
You can insert images, audio files and videos and it offers some pretty advanced editing
tools. You can even tap and hold on your presentation which turns your innocent digit into a laser
pointer allowing you to highlight all that groundbreaking research you have done.
It also has a customisable presenter view so you can always be one step ahead of your
audience and refer to your slide notes when needed. All this app is missing is a pair
of dorky runners and a turtle neck.
7 Notes Premium Now something you might find early on in your
studies is that if you get to used to typing all your notes and essays, when it comes to
exam time and your equipped with a pen, your hand tires quickly, your writing becomes illegible
and as a result and you pay for it when the person grading it can't read what your actually
saying.
Either that or you just prefer to take handwritten notes but wish someone other than yourself
could actually read it. Well check out 7Notes Premium HD.
This incredible app will convert your handwriting to perfectly legible text. It will even work
with sloppy joinedup running writing like mine. You can have it convert on the fly or
wait till you have completed your writing and then convert it afterwards.
A great way to prepare for those hand written exams as well as create digital searchable
copies of your hand written work.
iThoughts HD Mind mapping is a great way to brainstorm,
order your thoughts or express complex relationships in an easy to understand way, which is part
of the reason it's so popular in education. The best app for this bar none is iThoughts
HD for the iPad, or iThoughts for iPhone. This app is bursting with powerful features
but makes mind map creation easy. You can create a mind map without leaving the keyboard.
Triple tap the space bar to create a new child, hit return three times to create a new sibling
or tap the delete key three times in an empty topic to delete.
You can easily add images to your min map or choose from the stock image library that
comes with the app. Tap the info icon to add an icon, change colour and shape, format the
text and you can even hyperlink to another mind map, email address or web page by entering
a url, then just tap and hold on a topic to load the link.
One of it's greatest features for students is the ability to highlight the text in any
of your topics then tap the Research button. This performs a search on Google, Wikipedia
or Wolfram Alpha. You can then tap and hold on an image to add it to the topic in iThoughts,
highlight text and save it as a note accessible from the top pull down bar or tap the site
title to save it as a url.
iThoughts has a huge number of export and import options and will allow you upload your
maps to your Dropbox account. You can even generate an HTML export complete with hyperlinks
making this the most powerful mind mapping app available with the iPad version offering
the best experience due to the larger screen size.
Numbers When it comes to spreadsheets, Apple's Numbers
for both iPhone and iPad offers the best blend of functionality and ease of use and gives
you access over 250 functions which is wasted on me as the only one I ever use is SUM. It
has an excellent interactive getting started guide and like all Apple apps comes with a
nice range of templates to get you started but normally you will want to choose Blank
document.
Tap once anywhere on the spreadsheet to reveal the top and side bars. You can move your spread
sheet by tapping and holding the "table handle" in the upper left or drag the column and row
handles to add or remove columns and rows. To enter data just double tap on any cell
and above the keyboard select either numerical, date or duration , text or the formula keyboard.
You can also add images, additional tables, charts and shapes making this the must have
all round spreadsheet app for the iPhone or iPad.
Pages If you want a rock solid word processor that
will allow you to create epic essays, professional resumes as well as image rich posters for
school events then you can't go past Apple's Pages for the iPhone and iPad. It supports
iCloud sync so you can always have the latest version across your iPhone, iPad and Mac and
soon PC with Pages on the Cloud.
Choose from one of the many templates or start from scratch. Pages gives you access to all
your standard formatting tools including line spacing which is essential for APA Harvard
formatting. You can add your headers and footers under Tools > Document Setup and can easily
add media including images and video, tables, charts and shapes. If you are writing a report
or essay make sure you turn word count on under Tools > Settings in the upper right
and to get more info just tap the word count to reveal more information on character, page
and paragraph count.
iBooks One of the greatest expenses for any student
is those giant text books that not only cost an arm and a leg, they also weigh a ton. This
makes Apple's very own iBooks app a must have as you may find that some of your set texts
in iBook format are significantly cheaper than even a second hand copy.
Having an iBook makes research easy as you can use the search features to find exactly
what your looking for. You can tap, hold and drag over sections of text and either highlight
them or write a note and can create your own book marks by tapping the icon in the upper
right. These can then be viewed from the table of contents area. If you happen to have a
text book created after the release of iBooks 2 then you can also view your notes as study
cards by tapping the notepad icon in the status bar. On the front of the card you will have
the highlighted text and if you tap on the card it will flip over revealing your notes.
iTunes U Finally if you want to complement your studies
with additional material, one of the best ways to do that is with Apples iTunes U app.
This gives you access to thousands of free course from the worlds leading universities
including Stanford
and Harvard. Use
the search field to find what your looking for then subscribe or download individual
items of interest including audio, video and PDF files.
