[Paolo] I had no idea what college, like a big university was like so I wanted to get
a taste of it before I went in for fall quarter, because I knew it was going to be kind of
tough. [Naomi] I'm trying to get into the computer
science department and the class that I took was a balance between computer science and
math and art.
[Carrie] I wanted to come early because I haven't been to American before and I never
take English classes so I really wanted to get here earlier to like get used to the system,
like get used to the teachers, get used to the language.
[Naomi] Because of the classes you get familiar with the resources to go to if you need help
and you learn that professors care about how you do in their classes.
[Paolo] It taught me how to build relationships with the professor cause that really helps
a lot in college I mean people always say that, parents always tell me that but I didn't
really listen to that all that much. But once I came here and saw how the system works it
helped a lot. [Naomi] The workload was a good way to set
myself up because I'd just come in from the summer so I was like "oh, summer mode." It
helped transfer to the massive workload that came up during a fall quarter. It was a really
good transition. [Carrie] It's the smallest class I've ever
taken for my student life up to now. And we had a really good time because it's so small.
[Paolo] I got to interact with all my classmates every single day so I made friends through
that too and it was just easy to see everybody else's work comparing to each other and then
for class discussions it was a lot easier too because there were only 12 of us.
[Naomi] It's not like the massive amount that's going to be there during the start of the
year so it's easier to get to know people. You recognize people around and you just start
talking to them and you're like, "Hey oh I see you around a lot" and you start chatting.
[Paolo] We would always go like out to eat, we went to football games together, every
activity you can think of we did it together, so we got to experience all that before we
had like the load from classes. We got to experience the campus a lot because
there were many activities going on in the different parts of campus; you know the campus
is pretty big. Off campus we got to experience downtown Seattle
a lot and got to go shopping at like all the shopping malls, all the stores, went to Pike
Place, went to the market, went to the gum wall and experienced all of that.
[Carrie] I had a friend who came from the same city as I am from, and we had been friends
before we went to UW. He didn't take Early Fall Start and when he came here he didn't
know everything around the campus and because I've been here for three weeks, it feels like
I'm getting more used to the campus than him in the start of the autumn quarter.
[Naomi] When you're thinking about moving into college you're like, "Oh my God, I'm
coming from high school, am I going to make any friends? Oh my goodness." Then you come
into Early Fall Start and you meet a bunch of really cool people and you have a blast
and get really comfortable on campus. [Paolo] I wish I could do Early Fall Start
every single summer because it was fun, you got credits, and then I got to meet awesome
people so that was that was a very, very big plus for my college experience.
