Hi, this is Yolanda Vanveen, from vanveenbulbs.com, and in this segment, we're going to talk all
about how to control slugs and snails, naturally. My whole goal is to have an organic garden,
not to use any chemicals in my yard, because I don't want to kill the caterpillars, and
I don't want to kill the butterflies, and the bees, and all the beneficial insects that
are in my yard. Any chemical that I would use to kill slugs or snails, would probably
kill other beneficial insects and caterpillars, and butterflies and all the other plants in
my yard, and even more dangerously, what happens, is any chemicals that are inside of these
slugs and snails, get eaten by the birds that eat them, so to kill slugs and snails naturally,
you need to have other animals in your yard. Birds are perfect. Birds love slugs, so if
you can attract more birds to your yard, then you will find that you'll have less slugs,
so just put some bird feeders out or some bird houses out, and you'll find that, that
will help a lot. Another easy trick, is just dry out everything, so instead of watering
everyday, actually let everything dry out to the point, it's almost wilting, because
that way, everything won't be moist, and the slugs and the snails won't get into them,
and won't eat all your lush foliage, so dry it out, and an easy trick, is put some bark
dust on top of your beds, or physically too, I every night go out, and look under rocks,
look under sticks, look under your pots, and you'll find slugs and snails. Just put salt
on them, or actually put them into water, and drown them, so there's a lot of natural
ways, that you can kill slugs, and snails, and in the end, I have found they don't get
all of my garden, just a few plants, so I try to concentrate on the plants that they
don't mess with, more than the ones that they do, and I found just by pulling the leaves
out that get damaged in the early spring, by mid summer, the slugs and the snails aren't
quite the problem, and everything grows naturally, and I can deal with them.
