Conyers School is a mixed comprehensive school (11-18) in a town called Yarm
in the Northeast of England.
I am a former pupil of Conyers School, I had seven years here.
I was lucky enough to be Head Girl and after my seventh year I went
off to Oxford University to study both French and German.
During my time at Oxford I taught in a German school for a little while
and I knew and was convinced that the end of my degree I'd want to go into teaching.
[GENERAL CLASSROOM NOISE]
I've had the huge benefit of being trained as a teacher at Conyers school.
The school is very much into forwarding the careers of the teachers and making sure
that they've got a wealth of opportunities to further their
own career and develop themselves as teachers and as leaders.
The school really promotes being adventurous with teaching and learning
and trying things out. Things won't always work but it's important that you develop
yourself as a teacher and try new things and sometimes go out of your comfort zone.
[GENERAL CLASSROOM NOISE]
Getting children to enjoy learning is about getting them to understand
why they are learning it and getting them to enjoy the learning that they are doing.
Sometimes it might be wearing a silly beret but it gets them having a laugh
and enjoying it and if they know that when they have that beret on that they
speak French.
I guess enjoyment is the key but having that academic rigour behind it is
obviously extremely important.
I absolutely love my work. I think teaching is an extremely, it might sound
like a cliché, a rewarding job. It is hard work, I know that, I've certainly learnt
that it's hard work. It's tiring but it's definitely definitely worth it
and I do enjoy it.
