For more than 30-years now, the Bitterroot Winter Special Olympics has returned to the
slopes of Lost Trail Pass for a day of fun, accomplishment and overcoming challenges.
Students from all over the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys, along with their friends and families,
gather to compete in a variety of competitive events. That includes downhill skiing, snowshoe
races and a lot more.
But outside of the organized competition, there's also a lot of time to just have a
good time, whether its riding tubes, a horse drawn sleigh or sharing laughs and hot chocolate.
This will be the 33rd year for Lost Trail Powder Mountain to host the games, which are
scheduled for Tuesday, January 28th and Wednesday, January 29th. With dozens of Olympians taking
part, there are a score of tasks that volunteers can help with, from making sure everyone is
geared up and safe, to helping them celebrate their accomplishments.
That means the word is being issued for dozens of volunteers to help out. The best part is,
you don't need to have any winter sports skills whatsoever. While there are some jobs for
people used to getting around on snow, organizers say they can use anyone's help. Even just
giving "smiles and hugs" goes a long way.
Volunteers are needed on one, or both days of the event, which start in the morning and
usually wrap up in the early afternoon.
