We are with BMW 420d.
At first glance even if this car resembles the 3 Series
with two missing doors in fact it is not.
Because this car is a coupe
and it entails all the necessary sport details of a coupe.
More aggressive headlamps, more compressed kidney grills
and the air outlets of the front fenders are the displayed main characteristics.
At the rear of the car the inclined spoiler attracts the attention.
Moving to the interior the 4 Series displays
even more of the same genetic characteristics of the 3 Series.
The layout of the instruments, steering wheel,
display panels are almost identical.
The only difference here is having a bigger door
and the seat belt is being served to you when the door is closed.
The driving characteristics of the 4 Series are nearly identical to the 3 Series.
However there is one different detail,
which is that the body is 10 mm lower.
This makes the car turn the corners more dynamically
and with a better performance.
420d utilizes 2,0 liters four cylinder diesel engine
which is one of my favorite in BMW range.
It produces 184 HP and 380 Nm of torque and takes 420d
from naught to 100 km/h in 7,3 seconds.
This is a good value for a diesel engine.
Of course the greatest advantage of a diesel engine is it being frugal.
The technical data gives us that 420d consumes 4,6 liters of diesel in 100 kms.
This spec is a bit ambitious.
It is not easy to achieve this but you can drive the 420d frugally
for long distances in town and in highway.
Even though the 420d is equipped with a diesel engine
it performs reasonable sportiveness.
I can say that there is no engine noise in the cabin.
Because it has a very good insulation.
In addition the diesel engine's high torque gives you very good traction
and it satisfies the sports quality.
The steering isn't perfect but its performance is good and
it assists you to turn the corners fast.
In BMW 4 Series, you can choose the driving modes as in many other models.
This is achieved by the buttons next to the gear lever.
When you start the engine the system that initially begins with Comfort mode
and can be switched to Sport, Sport Plus or Eco Pro.
When in Sport mode the acceleration responds are improved,
the steering and the suspensions are stiffened.
However the stiffness of the steering does not feel natural.
It feels rather artificial.
The 8 speed automatic gearbox is better than the gears of the other brands
using double clutch technology.
The transitions and decisions it makes are so good
that you do not feel the listlessness of the lower and the upper revs.
Because the gearbox makes its decisions perfectly.
You can change the gears quickly from the paddle shifts
which is an optional extra.
The 420d is not a hardcore sports car, you should accept this.
However in daily use if you want comfort and have performance
with no compromise 420d will satisfies all of these.
420d's driving characteristics are not perfect
but will satisfy the expectations well.
Sportive look, frugal engine and quality interior
gives you your money's worth.
