Erik: What are the pros and cons of project-based work?
Jason: So because I run a marketing company, we have project-based work and then we have
on-going retainer-based work with our clients. And my other projects, sometimes they're short
projects and sometimes they're really long projects, like for Forking Tasty for example,
it's in its 4th season of the supper club and that project has evolved and I've been
able to nurture it and change it and steer it in different ways and test different things.
And so I think what you get out of the longevity of -- or a project that's longer, is the ability
to change it over time and almost sort of watch it grow like a child, perhaps. With
the shorter burst projects, you don't have that longevity obviously, and you have to
sort of cram everything in to a short time frame and then it is what it is, and you can't
really learn from your mistakes but a lot of times there's -- that's okay, because that's
the nature of what that project is. So when comparing longer-term projects and shorter-term
projects, I think they both have pros and cons. I personally like to have both of them.
I've never done a short-term project and was sad to see it go away, like I have a very
detached -- I can very easily detach from this beautiful thing that I built or this
amazing event that we did or this killer marketing campaign that we did or this fantastic meal
that I had. But I recently wrote something down on a piece of paper which has a line,
and on one side of the line, I wrote, "marketer," and on the other side of the line, I wrote,
"content creator," and then I wrote "me," in the middle of the line. And I've been contemplating
lately which side of that line I want to be on, and to the question, when I'm on a short-term
project, I miss the long-term nurturing -- or the long-term project and how you can nurture
it. When I'm on a long-term project, I get bored and I want to do these other little
short-term projects to keep my excitement level up. So I don't know what side of the
line I'm on yet. Working on that.
