Heavy rains bring landslides and flooding to western and southwestern Japan. Heavy rains
brought over 30 landslides and flooding to over 10 homes in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture.
Officials in Kitakyushu City have advised some 6,000 households to evacuate due to risk
of flooding, as well as an additional 15,000 households in three other municipalities to
avoid landslide and flood risk. In Yamaguchi, Shimane and Hiroshima Prefectures, where one
elderly person has perished and three others are missing, 8,000 households have similarly
been advised to move for their safety. The torrential rains also stranded more than 16,000
passengers as train service was interrupted for several hours’ time.
