Fatal forest fires sweep Yunnan, China. A forest fire that began in the southwestern
Chinese province on Saturday, May 22 was spurred on by strong winds. Thanks to the efforts
of provincial firefighters and volunteers, it was contained by the following day. Unfortunately,
12 villagers from Cuiyu Township in Lijiang City who had gone missing while helping extinguish
the flames were later found by rescuers to have perished. Local government officials
stated that the bereaved families will be provided with financial assistance.
