If you use Gmail on your Android device or the web, new changes could be coming your
way.
For your phone, leaked screengrabs show Google might be adding a navigation drawer, rather
than the drop-down menu in the current Gmail app. The buttons for "compose" and "search"
have also found a new home in the top action bar. (Via Android OS)
Android Police say they spotted the change in a Google I/O session video. And while some
argue the screengrabs could just be a mock-up, TechCrunch points out the presentation makes the changes
look possible. Not to mention the fact that the navigation drawer would make using the
app a lot easier, especially for those who like to use a lot of labels.
On the web, Gmail could have new Category tabs that organize emails into separate inboxes
based on the content within the email. (Via 9TO5 Google)
So let's say you get an email from Facebook or Twitter. That would be filtered into the
inbox titled "Social."
Other emails would get placed in categories like Main, Offers, Notifications, and Forums.
The Next Web explains the categories would function a lot like AOL's Alto application.
The Verge says this type of change is a possible sign Google is trying to play "catch up."
Outlook added "Quick View" filters back in 2010.
And The Next Web says if these rumors are true, users could expect the changes to be
rolled out over the next few weeks.
