Here's a question from a viewer who writes, "My local drug store will give out flu shots,
but not to children less than 10 years old, why is that?" Boy you know it's hard for me
to get in the head of what they think it a particular drug store, but let me just talk
a little bit about flu shots or shots against influenza. Influenza is a viral illness. It's
probably one of the illness to make you most likely to make you significantly sick that
a child or an adult can experience. And every year there is a vaccine developed in concertation
with the Centers for Disease Control and microbiologist and epidemiologists throughout the country
as their best guess at what the flu virus strains will be that particular year. Flu
vaccine or influenza vaccine is very, very safe and it's recommended for all children
over six months old and all adults. There are different types of flu vaccine and your
pediatrician or healthcare providers can talk to you about what is the best for your child.
Certain pharmacies do give flu shots and they have their own rules about how old a child
should be before receiving a flu shot at the particular pharmacy. But since children should
have flu shots and just because you encounter difficulty at a pharmacy, I'd really suggest
you go back to your child's doctor to get the right flu shot for your child. So I hope
that answers your question and I hope you have a healthy winter. Thank you.
