A St. Louis boy has a rare talent and an even more
unique way of cultivating it. - He has Tourette's Syndrome
and one of his uncontrollable ticks just won him an award.
Fox News Teresa Witter joins us with the champion
whistler right in our midst, Teresa. - He is right in our midst and he is
so good you would swear that Robby Hood has a whistling coach.
But no, whistling is just what he does.
And he can't stop, but after hearing him you will wonder,
why would he want to?
Only two things could make such beautiful music.
A perfectly pitched song bird,
or this nine year old boy.
The single child of a single mom and there's nobody around that's taught him this.
There's nobody.
Whistling is not a hobby for Robby Hood,
it is something he cannot control.
Something he cannot stop: a tick.
Robby has Tourette's Syndrome. Well, I had, like, Tourette's when I was born,
so that's why I'm... and whistling is one of them.
I remember when I first started whistling,
which was like this. - And then one day, he made sound,
and then it seemed like two days later, he was doing symphonies.
He got so good, he wanted to compete, so he did.
At the International Whistlers Convention in North Carolina in April.
I got really nervous right when I was going on,
but, I felt like I was going to puke, but I didn't.
The nerves couldn't beat him. He took second place,
whistling a Hungarian Dance No. 5 and
this is the tune that brought down the house and lifted Robby up.
Something that was at one time annoying and setting him apart
has not only included him, but in some points, put him above.
Done!
How spot on was that Star Wars?
It's so impressive. He was the youngest winner at the competition,
and his mom says it's probably because no one can come close
to the 10-12 hours a day that Robby practices.
Obviously that means he practices uncontrollably in school.
His teacher at Mary Institute in St. Louis Country Day School
addresses that new on the edge,
and also new, the assembly his classmates had for him when he came back
a whistling champion. - That is amazing!
That is. He is really good. - I know and you know the funny thing is
his pitch sounds perfect.
He's never had any sort of musical lessons except for what he has at school.
His mom is a drama coach, she works with him a little bit,
but he really can tell pitch.
And he learns it all, just simply by listening.
Wow! - He's a big Star Wars fan that's why he's so good at that one.
He thought he was going to puke, but he didn't.
Thanks Teresa. Typical nine year old! - Well we all might...
