I love what I do right now.
It's the best experience, the best
in my professional career
I love my job because I love
working with the students.
I work with an amazing faculty
I have all the resources I need
all the resources they need,
it's all about the students. The thing that's different now
that has not been the case in the past
is the pace of change
and
much
post secondary education is changing
and this institution has done a remarkable job
of
changing along with the times
that we're in.
I mean at this time economic challenges and
changing demographics,
education is
even more important.
and the type
of education that we deliver which is hands on
experiential
applied learning
is increasing in value in recognition across the world, not just here in Canada.
And so I went back to school,
I did a Masters,
eventually I did a Phd in Education
because I wanted to know more about how do I engage the learners,
whether it's in a clinical environment,
whether it's in a classroom, and of course now
in an online learning environment.
That's
just always
been
something that intrigues me.
I know, I speak from experience
when I say
education can change your
life.
So that's what makes it fulfilling for me,
to come in here every day
because I know I play a little part
in helping
a student
transition
and make that transformation
in their lives too, and it's just a good feeling.
It's
(a)
one of the great
organizations in this
in this region
first of all. And
people know that
when they arrive here.
We're hiring people who have very fine tuned skill
sets
and really who
have not only the passion, but they're bought in to
helping
students succeed
throughout their journey here at the college.
But more importantly have to bring a passion
a passion for caring, a passion for service
because
our students have needs and we need to
fulfill those needs on a daily basis.
The staff and faculty come to Algonquin
almost all the time with some type of
industry experience private sector or public sector
so that
when they arrive here there's this sense of
what
we
do here
matters.
It's a
very dynamic
place,
in fact that's what love about Algonquin College.
There's no two
days that are really the same. We've evolved as a staff, as a
faculty
body,
the campus has changed dramatically, we've added new
buildings,
new facilities,
new functionality.
You'll never be bored in your
position here, this is the most exciting places in the world to
work
and that's the little
model that we have in our office.
Whether you come from a smaller community or even from an urban setting,
it really feels like home when you come here.
It doesn't actually feel like separate
campuses
they have distinct
taste
and feel.
We're
much different in
look and
location,
but I can
pop down in Woodroffe
or I can pop down in
Pembroke
and feel
that I'm not anywhere different
from anywhere else.
The staff's always friendly, accomodating and
very professional
wherever I am.
And when you find a place where
students,
staff, faculty come here
with their dreams
and not only people come here with their dreams,
but also you see that people who are
working here
are very
competent,
well intentioned,
and they want to be a team.
At the end of the day I don't think I could do my job very well
unless
I loved
the job I was doing
and
I love being here at Algonquin College and I'm here because I believe
in what we have to offer -
the educational opportunities,
the experience of Algonquin College,
and when I walk through the halls
and I see the way that we teach
I know that we're doing
things
right.
I'm very proud
to work at Algonquin because they are such an
accessible environment for our students. Our buildings are acessible,
we have one of the only accessible residences
in Ontario.
We are working, we have an ALD, a full-time person working on making
you know print material accessible, videos accessible, all the websites
accessible.
The best part of my job here is that I was a client
of the Centre for Students with Disabilities,
I took Radio Broadcasting here.
I knew how to work the equipment
and
they just asked one day - can
you
help us with this,
I started doing some part-time work,
I
really liked
working in the department, did some more work
a full-time position opened and I took it.
I think the people who decide to come to Algonquin College
have a deep commitment
to wanting
to work with people who
will make a difference in our community.
It's a very exciting environment,
we have people
with a can do attitude, we have a culture of respect and
caring because we have shared
value as a scholar.
If you truly believe and embrace our core
values of
caring,
learning,
integrity and respect,
I think that once again this is a place that you want to work
And in the life of a faculty or
staff member
that is whatever it is,
I couldn't have wished for anything better.
I can't see myself really leaving
and like I said, it's that old saying
is - if you love
what you do,
you never work a day in your life,
Algonquin College kind of embodies that saying
totally.
