This Friday, the almost 300 Auckland port-workers
will be taken through redundancy details after the announcement today
that their jobs will be made redundant
and given to contract workers.
Rapaera Tawhai was down at the port today.
This is what protestors want.
But it's not to be.
But it's made clear today that 292 jobs will be cut.
Although they lose their jobs, they can reapply as a contractor.
Workers can apply to be contractors,
but the concern of some is they will have to cross the picket line
and leave the protest which has been going for a whole month.
Contracting will not work for my family.
Wirihana Takuira has been working here for three years,
and he's just become a father. He is the sole-earner.
It will be hard.
It's the same for this Northlander. He's the sole bread winner.
He's worked here for 13 years.
The Port of Auckland has already started using contractors.
New blood, and a new beginning.
The union is now pointing the finger at the Auckland Mayor.
The union says their fight doesn't end here.
They're still organising protest action,
but they're not saying what or where.
Rapaera Tawhai, Te Karere.
