or leave us a voicemail with your question to 192 David P here's a
question about the george Zimmerman verdict this is from Dan he says
in the aftermath avisan merman verdict many have called for Stand Your Ground
laws to either be reviewed
or repealed what is your position on Stand Your Ground laws what do you think
of the idea that murderers could you stand your ground to get away with
crimes
huge concern the problem for me with the george Zimmerman verdict
was not objectively speaking that there was a not guilty verdict because given
the evidence
given the law I actually can understand where the not guilty
verdict came from my problem is that it was completely legal
for george Zimmerman to be the initial catalyst for this confrontation with
Trayvon Martin in the first place right george Zimmerman is the one
who decided to rely on Martin looked suspicious george Zimmerman is the one
could stayed in his car and none of this would have happened
and as a result love arguably and again I'm not saying it
as as a statement of fact but arguably feeling threatened
by Trayvon Martin in the confrontation he created
being able to legally shoe Trayvon Martin dead
and not even be arrested that night remember that ladies and gentlemen he
went home that night
he toxicology was not done on him so we have no idea whether he was drunk
whether he was high at the time
and eventually be charged but then acquitted
my problem is not that the that the verdict was not guilty
specifically the problem Louis is that
mean what george Zimmerman did was legal according to the law so
absolutely we've got a review these laws yeah
the laws need to be reviewed I i understand. why certain
laws like this to put in place it's a really complicated situation because you
start asking yourself well
how do you put a law in place that would find someone guilty of something
or following someone that they perceive to be a dangerous criminal
and the aftermath of that incident
its it's really tricky well it isn't it isn't because again the crime was not
the following nobody ever argued the crime
was there should be the following that the crime was that
a confrontation that george Zimmerman created
ended up with him legally being able to claim he was defending himself because
he was allowed to stand your ground and no matter
who started the confrontation at the point that he felt threatened
the law did not compel him to retreat he was able to
as the term is stand his ground that's the problem if you change the
self-defense law
in Florida to one that is more similar to the one we have an in many other
states
which is you actually do have a duty to retreat
you can't just say hey I started to feel threatened I told them I can I shot the
guy
and that's it I just felt threatened you have a duty to retreat
and that so I think actually there are very specific changes that can be made
to these laws
that that would be would be to a good thing for society and a good thing for
Florida
