It is said that Maori will suffer if the government decides
to charge those who do are not paying their fines.
The Ministry of Justice collected $250 million
in driving fines last year.
Serenah Nicholson of the Hutt Valley Budget consultancy believes
long-time pensioners won't be able to pay their fines.
It means nothing to those on the benefit
because the benefit didn't change last year or this year.
According to the Minister for the Courts Georgina te Heuheu,
the package aims to tighten up on the enforcement
of traffic and driving penalties.
It will also provide other avenues of paying the fines.
They will be taking the people's grocery money
right out of their hands.
It is only adding to the burden on pensioners.
The amendment bill is now before Parliament now.
The Minister hopes it will be ratified in coming weeks.
