Hey it’s PJ from Paddy-O-Deck again, coming to you from Blue Point, NY which is in Suffolk
County on the south shore. As you can see it's just another day in the office, right
on the water. Its late October, 2013, almost a year to the day that (Hurricane) Sandy hit.
So as you can imagine, these people got hit pretty hard.
The house we're working at is right here. There was an electrical outlet on the wall
that wasn't working so obviously the water came up a lot of feet and disturbed the electrical
outlet and caused problems.
The deck that we built is an Azek Deck. The color is Slate Grey. And, it’s so nice we
built it twice. We built this one five years ago and as you can see the color holds up
pretty well. So, they look virtually identical. I believe this one was built in 2007, so it
was actually six years ago. The only difference is they got the bench.
The product is Azek. It’s a PVC and it doesn’t warp, split, crack, mold, nothing of that
nature. If you notice, if you look down at the floor, you don’t see any screw heads.
This is put down with what is called a hidden fastener Cortex system. It’s screwed down
and they give you these little plugs where if you look hard enough you can find them
but you really have to look for them. So as opposed to other hidden fastener systems where
you see the metal in between it's really not a hidden fastener system because you can see
the fasteners. This is truly a hidden fastener system so you don't see any of it.
This is the bench that we installed. Again, with hidden fastener systems. As you sit on
it, as you look at it, you don't see any screws and you really have to look for the plugs.
The other cool thing about Azek, as I mentioned it's PVC, I put some water here from this
little shower they got here. This as I mentioned is PVC and it doesn’t absorb water. So as
opposed to other wood composites which will remain nameless, it doesn’t mold. Other
products of the past they act like wood because they have elements of wood in them. Therefore,
they behave like wood and absorb water, they sponge up and grow and mold and turn green
no matter what color you pick.
The color holds up over time. The product holds up over time. It doesn’t crack, split, warp,
fade, anything of that nature. It’s spaced but it doesn’t move. The spacing is simply
for ventilation and water drainage. So if you get ice buildup or water build up, it
will go right through.
This Azek deck was built by Paddy-O-Deck almost one year to the day that Hurricane Sandy hit.
Our decks are stillhere. They are strapped down with hurricane clips, Tecos, PB-44, BC-40s.
The header is bolted to the house using Ledger Loks. This deck’s not going anywere, you
can park a truck on it.
