Announcer: Saints fans, please turn your attention to the big screens to honor
today’s Peoples Health Champion, Jairo Álvarez-Botero.
Jairo Álvarez-Botero: I’m 72 years old and at this point in my life I realize
No such thing as impossible.
Mayor Kip Holden: On March 10, 2008, at age 70, Jairo Álvarez-Botero wrote
a thrilling autobiographical account of his life, a rags to riches story,
“No Such Thing As Impossible”. Well, this personal story of triumph has
inspired thousands of people throughout the world.
Jairo Álvarez-Botero: My father always said,
“We were given life to do extraordinary things.”
Mayor Kip Holden: Here’s a man, once he was diagnosed with prostate cancer,
decided not to give up on life, who decided to race 72 miles on a bicycle
and then he won that race and was able to come back, show them that actually
there is hope if you believe and you go out and achieve.
He is going to be forever the champion and with Jairo, the light
at the other end of the tunnel is not another train.
Jairo, you are a true Champion and you have proved
There is no such thing as impossible.
