>>When they do that, they're
transfering marine resources way
into the forest. It is amazing
to see how much of this
ecosystem is driven by the sea.
You may expect salmon in British
Columbia, but carnivorous
plants? Even steep slopes here
are covered with bog-like
vegetation, and when you have
bog-like conditions with very
few nutrients, you get
carnivorous plants. Roundleaf
Sundew is everywhere, and is
joined by a longer-leaved
relative, the Great Sundew.
Perhaps the strangest are the
Butterworts, covered with short,
sticky glands that snare
tiny insects like flypaper.
I have come all this
way with the promise
of seeing grizzlies and
their impact on the ecosystem.
So, I'm off to meet up with
Larry Jorgensen, a tireless
voice for conservation of the
Great Bear and a member of
the Heiltsuk Nation. We head
up the Quay River and deep
into bear territory.
