Despite the crack down on environmental laws
forbidding the dumping of waste into Puarenga River, Whakarewarewa,
Red Stag sawmill says they are not breaking any laws.
Tuhourangi Environment Board spokesman Wally Lee says
for many years pollutants have been discharged in to the Puarenga river.
The Waipa Mill Environment Manager Tim Charleson says
from 1964 a oxidation system treats effluent from the mill
before it's discharged on to land above the ponds.
Children from Whakarewarewa need to be warned
about swimming in the Puarenga River and Charleson supports this.
This issue will no doubt continue into the future.
