Pick a spot on the map and you'll find a place where bullying is a
problem
but students at Orange high school are seeking a way to create a safer
environment they're now mapping their school to locate the spaces where bullying
takes place. "97 freshmen feel
that there's bullying in the cafeteria."
"As we enter high school the appearance of bullying changes dramatically and it's not
so outright, it's not so forward. A lot of it is behind closed doors."
"In the locker room, right by the gym
we had eleven
and the buses, 22."
"I think it's subtle things and talking behind people's backs and
just getting teased." "Everybody's connected by everything, phones
computers, facebook. It's just so easy to harass other people from behind a
computer screen."
To start the process of identifying bully zones, seniors passed out maps
to all 760 students.
"Well good morning, my name is Giovanna
for those who don't know me
and this is Jessica.
We're just coming from our history and democracy class, trying to figure out where
exactly you guys witness bullying."
"So you guys take a look at these maps,
just look for spots where you've witnessed trash talking, disrespect
any of those types of things and circle them on your map."
"Media center"
"Bullying is mostly in the locker room."
"Which places did you choose as high bullying hotspots?"
"I chose the cafeteria." "Verbal bullying"
"There's always people
saying mean things to each other." "I've heard name-calling." "Also sitting at different tables, people are mean about it." "Thanks guys"
"We want to spread awareness because
people need to know what bullying is and people need to know that it exists in our school.
I think addressing it and defining and spreading the awareness that it exists
is the first step in preventing it and combating it."
"This person's really highlighted
this hallway by the media center."
"So this is ninth grade, where do you see incidences
showing up? Where are the hotspots?" "A lot of hallways." " A lot of hallways?" "A lot of hallways." "The cafeteria"
"She pointed out that two kids wrote, well two
separate kids, wrote everywhere."
"Someone wrote everywhere, everyday and then circled the orchestra room.
'Especially here' is what they wrote."
"Wow ok, that's good to know"
"I got made fun of for my name because it doesn't sound American
so I was really quiet.
I never really talked in school because I was made fun of.
So I guess doing this project really helps.
Everytime I see someone get bullied, I stop and no matter what age they are,
if I know them or not, it doesn't matter.
Because I think about how much I would've loved for
someone to step in when I was getting bullied."
"They want to be in
a safe environment
and they wanna make a difference. They want to have an impact on their world." "Remember..."
"Not In Our School!"
