All right. This is Terry Crouppen of Brown and Crouppen, as you know, joining us for
a special discussion today about Butterball Turkey.
Yes. Yes. It is the only other thing I know anything about, and that is turkey.
You were just telling me a great story about Butterball.
My good friend in Kansas City, Rich Kline: His dad owned a poultry place and came up
with the name "Butterball" for turkeys and Butterball had to buy it from him.
Really?
I don't know.
See? I never know if Terry is telling the truth or not.
This is what he told me... but he can lie sometimes.
Yeah so he can... okay. So your company is having, as you always do at Thanksgiving...
We do. We like to give away turkeys, to share all the good things that have happened to
us with a local church, and we are going to do that on Sunday.
And we have some photos of past parties at Brown and Crouppen, so I imagine you of all
people, Terry.
Yeah, yeah. We had this incredible idea, which is on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we
have a giant meal, which for some reason we thought was a good idea...
and it is a good idea...
we eat like pigs.
Now the turkey idea is a great idea. This eating like a pig before you eat like a pig
is questionable.
Well, you get to talk to Carol Miller from Butterball, on the Turkey Talk Line.
I will. I will. If I can keep this thing in my ear.
You'll be alright. Yeah, Carol is there with you.
Hello Carol! Hi!
Are you talking to me? Oh, I'm sorry. Hello.
She's just like my ex-wife.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you. I have some questions for you. I'm throwing away
all my prepared questions because someone told me recently that you can add bacon to
turkey. Is there any way to do that? Have you heard about that? Putting it on the skin
of the turkey?
We receive recipes, all kinds. In fact, we have even talked with people who are putting
sausage links all over the turkey. So yeah, if you want to do that. I mean certainly.
What people are trying to do is keep a moist and tender turkey. Really, basting and anything
you put on the skin is not going to get through the skin.
But what about specifically about bacon? Can you coat the whole thing in bacon? Which is
a good idea about anything, acutally.
Bacon is good. If you have... it's like a raincoat here, so anything you put on your
raincoat, which is the skin, is not going to get into the meat much. So if you want
to do it because it certainly smells good while you are cooking it, but you really can
save your energy for doing something else.
Let me ask you this. I have called, by the way, the Butterball Turkey Line. Do you remember
me? I asked you what you were wearing.
He was the one who asked about bacon.
Let me ask you this: What is the craziest question you have had when you are on your
Butterball Turkey Line?
Well, I love the call from a lady from Denver, and she had a turkey in the snow bank outside
and she was so thrilled about doing that -- she thought it was a great idea -- but all of
a sudden it dawned on her that it snowed the night before and she did not know where her
turkey was. So she was on her merry way to go find it.
Okay, one other thing. I never know when to take the turkey off. How do you know?
That's a great thing. The best thing you could ever do: Get yourself a meat thermometer.
I want you do to that because 165 in the stuffing, the turkey is done, take it out of there,
or 180 in the thigh (have the tip of it not touching bone) and you are going to be fine.
So do that. You are not going to overcook the turkey, and you have the best, most tender
most juicy turkey you could possibly have.
So when the thermometer hits 180 in the thigh, not touching the bone, it is done.
It is. You do not have to overcook it.
There are going to be many happy Crouppens because of that. Hey! Thank you very much.
Well thank you. Call us at 1-800-BUTTERBALL or check out Butterball.com.
I always do!
Okay. So the bacon on the turkey is not going to keep it moist. That's... we've learned
that as well.
I don't know why she is lying about that, but I'm convinced that bacon on the turkey
has to get... the flavor has to...
Have you tried it?
No, but I'm going to.
Okay. Let us know. Let us know.
