Finland lies in Northern Europe, -
and Eastern and Northern Finland are very large in area compared to small countries.
If you superimpose Eastern and Northern Finland on a map of Europe, -
- you would notice how large it is compared to smaller countries -
or Great Britain, for example.
Printed intelligence has the potential to become a new spearhead in Finnish technology -
- in the sense that Finland already has a strong basis for it.
Therefore, we are already a step or two ahead of many other similar research environments in Europe or in the world.
We train a person, and he might return to his country of origin where he will in turn train more people.
It is actually almost the best thing that could happen to science.
We sometimes have students from countries where those students will become pioneers in this field.
Great ideas…
Research and development work lasting for years
The courage to start executing them.
A certain stubbornness has been required in order to get our own will through, -
- and from then on we have started pushing forward with great speed.
To be aware of the vast amount of challenges ahead. How to sell and how to conquer the world.
But when you know that the product is in order, you feel confident that we can do it.
Finland has a good reputation in technology and product development.
We are not stuck in old patterns, -
- and we especially encourage the introduction of new ideas and own innovations.
When I left for Southern Finland myself long ago, -
- they received me with open arms when I told them I was from Eastern Finland.
They know from the start that work ethics are high, work is carried out the way it’s supposed to, -
- and that the quality of work is on the desired level.
It has become clear to me that preserving nature in its original, -
- pure form with old forests and untouched shorelines is a big investment in the future.
It has a greater value than that of some short-term mining project or some other change.
The Saimaa subspecies of the ringed seal is extremely endangered and thin in numbers, -
- and special actions are required for saving it.
The speed is not amazing, but the quantities are even larger.
These spruces will probably become plywood.
The sturgeon is a very simple bony fish.
It is a form of hybrid between old species - cartilaginous fish and bony fish.
The water is of especially high quality in Finland, so the caviar always tastes right. Really top notch caviar.
We have received a lot of positive feedback for this taste from around the world.
It has a unique taste when bred in this water.
Well, my basic work day starts at approximately 10am and ends around 5pm, -
- and after that I might have some evening tasks.
Actually I live at Korvatunturi mountain, -
- but the Main post office is here at the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi.
There are around 200 000 reindeers in Finland.
Reindeers are really the traditional source of livelihood here in Lapland, -
- and they have brought nutrition and sustained life.
The Finnish mindset is that we want to do things well and thoroughly.
It is a strength that affects the customers’ decisions in the tourism industry in particular.
There are more reindeers in Lapland than there are people.
The reindeer is an extremely important animal for us, and it gives us a chance to survive here.
I don’t think there would be any life here in the North without the reindeer.
We the Sami people live and thrive here. This place is definitely not deserted.
The best moment was when they really saw the northern lights (aurora borealis), and everybody was cheering.
That’s the best moment.
It’s not easy for these tourists to come here from that far, especially for Asian people.
It’s a really long journey.
So if they really catch these northern lights, well, everybody is very happy.
Then I’m very happy too.
It is important for us to research the Arctic region in order to better understand the region and its people, -
- its nature and societies found in it, -
-because preparations for the future and changes brought on by climate change and globalization will probably require people to change their thinking, -
- their ways and their actions.
I would say that the strength of the Arctic region is its people.
It’s cold here, but we have warm people.
Eastern and Northern Finland includes Etelä-Savo, Pohjois-Karjala, Pohjois-Savo, Keski-Pohjanmaa, Kainuu, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa and Lappi
