Justice and equality. My name is Hakeem Ottun
and I am the president of the Brothers on a New Direction and I would like to thank you
all for coming out today. Unfortunately, I wish we could be meeting under better circumstances.
As you all know, we are here in light of the Trayvon Martin case.
And I am not here to assess blame, guilt or innocence.
I was not there that day and I can't tell you exactly what happened
but what I do know is that a seventeen year old boy
armed with nothing but a bag of skittles and an iced tea was shot and killed and nobody
was put through the legal justice system. This is not something we will stand for
because today we do not stand here as black or white or gay or straight,
or man or woman, but we stand here together as human beings
calling for justice in our beautiful country, whose foundation was built on the principles
of equality and justice for all. We must abandon the mindset we have
where we only care if we are directly effected.
To see any kind of progression, you must understand that it is our social responsibility
to combat any injustice, regardless of the circumstance.
Now, I would like to ask if we can all observe a moment of silence for Trayvon Martin
and his family.
Justice for Trayvon Martin. Justice for Trayvon Martin.
