Our topic today is... based on the material published by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research
Based on this material, we'll be able to work on what we already know about the relationship
between the Ottoman Empire and Cyprus.
Under the Ottoman rule, the Orthodox Church which was oppressed during the Latin domination, was restored.
The Christian orthodox believers, with some restrictions, had the freedom to express themselves on religious matters.
Remember we said that the Ottomans had granted the Orthodox Church with some privileges,
that the Latin conquerors did not do earlier.
With time, the archbishops became religious and political leaders,
in other words ____ of the Christian Orthodox community. Into what?
- Ethnarchs. Ethnarchs!
Ethnarch, meaning those who represented the entire nation.
As an example, let's say that a historian writes a book on Cyprus history
and asks you, as a professional photographer,
to choose one image that best represents the Ottoman Period in Cyprus.
Mumin? Which one did you choose?
Sir, we chose the image of grasshoppers. - Grasshoppers. Why?
Because grasshoppers effected both community's fields.
They don't chose one community' field only, when they destroy the crops in the fields
everyone gets effected. When dearth happens, it happens to all.
Excellent, really good!
So we are getting closer to the question, the main question of the booklet.
The main reason behind our exercise...
Which is: Why is it so difficult...
Why is it so difficult...
... to create ...
... to create ONE story ...
on the Ottoman Empire?
We create different stories, pose questions, but what is hard to create?
Just one story describing the Ottoman Empire as it was...
1, 2, 3. Over and done with!
We have many different elements. Just like a kaleidoscope, which we will see next time.
Like a kaleidoscope, where the whole image changes depending on which way you turn.
