Hello and welcome back to Friday Minis! Today, we'll be examining the terms "root",
"superuser", and the whole concept of elevation. You see, on many Linux-based operating systems,
and that, incidentally includes your Android smartphones,
you'll often hear the terms "root" and "superuser". Instead of jumping right into that though,
let us take a look at, well, your Windows Operating System.
You notice that, before you perform certain actions,
a little box pops up and asks you if you basically want to give a program administrative access.
That is the whole concept behind root and superuser access,
Essentially most programs, and in fact most users, when they're doing their thing,
They don't have to be able to access system settings, system files and configuration
And, so as to prevent catastrophic damage of any kind, essentially your normal user
is prevented from accessing these things
If you're doing something that requires you to change these stuff,
then you would actually request for elevation Or, in other words, to give yourself permission
to actually access these things Which is why in Linux-based systems, a superuser
is synonymous to an administrator If you have administrative access, you can
change certain system settings This is also how the term "rooting" an Android
phone comes about When you root your phone, it allows you to
access your phone as "root", or "administrator" This allows you to do various things, including
directly accessing hardware, changing the permissions of certain files
that, normally you would not have access to and of course, actually jump in, and modify
the root directory of whatever device it is.
Of course, if you don't know what you're doing, you could cause pretty catastrophic damage
But if you're just rooting your android phone, chances are, that won't happen
Anyway I hope I've clarified the concepts behind "root", "superuser" and elevation today
