Hi, I'm James Dix from Reptile Rescue Service in Salt Lake City, Utah. We're discussing
how to pick, basically, a mini-turtle versus an African spur thigh or Sacatta. If you get
a little box turtle like this, here, he doesn't really need a big, large, huge home. They
don't get too big. This is about a full grown one, here. Sometimes they get a little larger.
This is about a five year old, little three-toed box turtle. This is a five year old, too.
Okay, as you can see, those are easy to take care of. You can get 'em in your house, and
put 'em in a container. Hibernate 'em with that. This is a Sacatta, African spur thigh.
This one here is a five year old, big difference. This guy here eats about four heads of lettuce
and about a pound of zucchini a day, where one head of lettuce would last these guys
for over a week. But you don't just feed 'em lettuce. You need to give 'em a good combination
of squash, mixed greens, and everything else. This turtle here will actually get up to two
hundred and forty four pounds, and live over two hundred years. So when this guy starts
growing, like he is right now, you'll need to put him in your garage. And if you live
in a state that's winter, you need to consider that this guy would come in for seven to nine
months of the year, and be kept at eighty five degrees. So you would have to make sure
you had a big enough pen for him, and a food supply. As they get bigger, up to a hundred
pounds and beyond that, they can run you a hundred and fifty a month to feed this guy.
