Welcome to Oasis High School. This is an orientation presentation for new and prospective students.
Oasis is a WASC accredited college preparatory, alternative public high school. Per Independent
Study law and prior to enrollment, the student, parent and school must agree that OHS placement
is in the best interest of the student, and that the student always has a classroom option.
Most courses are UC approved, and we offer a wide variety of on-line courses. Instruction
is through traditional, online, or hybrid independent study. Students earn attendance
credit based on the assignments they complete and submit.
The school Course Offerings and Student/Parent Handbooks are posted on our website, www.oasishigh.org,
under Bulletin Board in the navigation section.
Oasis' principal is Mrs. Marovich, Mr. Barraza is the counselor, and Mrs. Herman is the school
secretary/registrar. There are four full-time teachers, Mr. Major, who is also the department
chair, Mrs. Fouret, Mr. Kent and Mrs. Verrett. They can be reached at 760-723-1886.
Courses are designed to be completed in a semester, and students are expected to complete a minimum
of 6 courses each semester for 30 credits, for a total of 60 credits per academic year.
Every course has a syllabus outlining the assignments. A weekly assignment sheet given
at each meeting contains instructor information (name, phone number, e-mail address) as well
as assignments, due dates, and grading criteria. It is the students' responsibility to read
each course syllabus carefully and to follow all assignment directions.
District graduation requirements include 4 years of English, 2 years Math including Algebra
and Geometry, 3 years Social Studies, 2 years of Science, 1 year of World Languages or Visual/Performing
Arts, 2 years of PE, 8 one year elective courses, and 1 semester each of Computer Skills and
Health for a total of 230 credits. If a student wants to go to a 4-year college/university,
requirements will be 3-4 years of Math, 3 years of lab Science. 3 years of Language,
I year of Visual/Performing Arts and 1 extra year of a College prep elective.
Additional graduation requirements for class of 2015 and beyond includes taking at least
one 10 credit (2 semester) class online and completion of 10 hours of community service
per year, for a total of 40 hours in 4years.
Expectations: The role of the Oasis teacher is to design online and offline courses that
are based on CA State Standards and meet CA graduation requirements. Oasis teachers are
responsible for evaluating student performance. Teachers prepare students by emphasizing essential
skills such as studying independently, maintaining appropriate communication, following directions,
attending to details, and managing time. Teachers also design program options to accommodate
individual learning styles. The options include Oasis designed college preparatory courses,
both online and offline, at-home and on-campus participation, and early graduation.
Expected roles for Parents and Students: The role of the parent is to assist by helping
students understand (not do) assignments, syllabus interpretation, due dates, time management
and transportation to school as needed. Parents are to support Oasis High School goals, rules
and regulations and finally, monitor student progress and work quality on a regular basis.
The role of the student is to read each course syllabus thoroughly, follow all syllabus and
assignment directions, complete and submit assignments on time and take personal responsibility
for their academic performance.
Legal regulations governing independent study regarding attendance and work completed are:
That students are required to attend weekly and complete approximately 30 hours of work
each week. Students and parents sign a Master Agreement twice a year. The Master Agreement
is a "contract" required by the state for Independent Study students. Your homework,
(30 hours per week or 5 days per week @ 6 hours per day) is your attendance. Incomplete
homework or non-attendance at your weekly appointment means 5 days of truancy. Missing
three times (3x) means no/few credits earned and possible change of placement or return
to comprehensive high school classroom. 1st truancy equivalent to 5 days missed leads
to parent contact. 2nd truancy equivalent to 10 days missed results in a parent/student
conference with the principal. 3rd truancy or 15 days missed will be a change of placement.
The GOAL is to earn a minimum of 30 credits per semester. Students who are behind on credits
or those who wish to graduate early need to do extra work.
Skills vital to the success of an Oasis student are: Time Management -- meaning, plan for
weekly appointments and be punctual, work on assignments daily and turn them in on time.
Accountability -- to be responsible for your actions and the work you produce. Your academic
work product is a reflection of you .Responsibility -- which means pay attention to your work
(read and organize), practice good time management, and contact Oasis staff when necessary. Perseverance
-- that is, don't give up on something, keep trying and ask for help, and Communication
in any form: call, email, Skype... ask for help and be up front and honest with your
teachers and your parents.
Counseling and College planning is available through Mr. Barraza. His extension is 4014,
and is available weekly at Oasis or anytime by appointment. Seniors should meet with Mr.
Barraza as soon as possible to find out more about scholarships, financial aid, and college
entrance requirements. Parent communication is essential. Student Progress is reported
weekly by each teacher, so parents should check the weekly assignment sheets and monitor
student work. Parents can contact Oasis staff via phone or email for additional information.
In the event of illness or emergency, ONLY A Parent/legal Guardian CAN CHANGE or Reschedule
a STUDENT'S APPOINTMENT DAY OR TIME. Students cannot make these changes.
Oasis students may participate in athletics at Fallbrook High school following CIF and
NCAA rules and eligibility. Oasis H.S. has a CIF multi-school agreement with Fallbrook
High School. Oasis students are allowed to try out and participate in any sport, but
must be cleared through the FHS Athletic Office (ext. 3610). Students must meet the same academic
requirements as FHS students including taking four academic courses during season. College-bound
student-athletes who want to compete for Divisions I and II programs must be certified academically
(and also as an amateur) by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Go to http://eligibilitycenter.org
for more information. Remember, it's up to the student and his/her family to make sure
that the student is NCAA compliant through the Clearinghouse in order to protect eligibility
for college admissions.
We encourage Oasis students to explore other ventures outside of Oasis High School including
Community College courses, ROP courses, Work Experience, Voluntary Community Service & Learning
Opportunities. Music, Theater & the Arts, Athletics and Other Extra-curricular activities
All students are required to participate in state testing including CSTs and passing both
the Math and English parts of the CA High School Exit Exam.
Other services offered to assist students are daily lunches for purchase, or free and
reduced for those who qualify. On-line access to Oasis course content is available through
APEX, Haiku, and UCCP. Net-books and Kindles are available for checkout on a limited basis.
To complete registration, obtain and complete all registration paperwork including proof
of Tdap, the Whooping Cough booster and return to Mrs. Herman. Get an I.D. card photo taken,
and please ask a staff member if you have further questions.
Good luck and have a great year!!
