Over $80 million is allocated to Maori broadcasting,
but Te Paepae Motuhake, in its review of government spending
on the revitalisation of the Maori language, says
a board named Te Maataawai be established
and Te Mangai Paho disestablished.
They are the funders,
but for how long.
That's the benefit of it.
We have two or three years to discuss what to do.
However, time is running out for Te Mangai Paho
under the recommendations of Te Paepae Motuhake,
who says all Maori language funding should be directed
to a new board to distribute.
But how will it be divided if they have to distribute the fund
to Maori Television
which is currently being distributed by Te Mangai Paho.
Maori broadcasting currently receives around $80 million
for Maori Television and Maori radio.
Who are they to say that this is wasted money?
No amount of money can help restore our language to the heights.
This elder has been broadcasting on radio for 20 years.
Now he's sitting on the fence.
But now they are looking to create a new board to manage the fund.
We shall see how fruitful that idea is.
The government has the final say.
Roihana Nuri, Te Karere.
