Each week, when the parliament has passed bills, I have to take those bills across to
the Governor for his signature.
Governor, I have eight bills this morning for Royal Assent…
Thank you.
My role really can be divided I think up into several parts. One is a ceremonial role, the
other is a constitutional role and the other is a community role, that’s the way I like
to think about it. The constitutional role is a process where any act of parliament that
has been through both houses and passed by a majority needs to receive Royal Assent and
that Royal Assent is given by the Governor who signs off on the legislation.
When the Governor signs the bill, on behalf of Her Majesty, the bills become an Act of
Parliament, and are therefore a law.
