I think kids are innovators and I think by working together and letting go of the reins
and understanding that kids can actually teach you as well,
that's the powerful story of the classroom.
That's where you get innovation, creativity, that's where I get the rush every day.
Seeing what kids can do, seeing how they grow, seeing how they adapt and knowing
that they can basically go out and change the world, that's what inspires me.
Canvas helps me and also helps students to be innovators because it lets you create.
Cheryl and I started collaborating and I said what's that something we could do that could tie
into bullying with tolerance and hatred and humanity and love and acceptance
and so we thought the civil rights.
>> I wanted to start a conversation and the best way to do that is through images.
They had to write about it, they had to narrate it, speak about it and then we critiqued
and discussed and it was just a really wonderful way to open up the conversation.

The project kind of blossomoned, we got the school at McMichael
[ assumed spelling ]
where I used to teach, the English department on board and the next thing you know,
the students were creating their own website
and literally sharing what they were learning with the world.
>> It was a good eye operiner.
Doing that project made me think about the underdogs, you know,
just trying, just be nice to people.

>> It made us kind of realize what our words can do to people.
>> I really love using the discussion feature of Canvas simply because there are a lot
of students that are not comfortable talking out loud.
>> With Canvas, everybody was able to come together and the people who didn't talk a lot
in class were able to form their opinions, to say their opinions
and eventually those people later on in the class, actually did start talking
out in the class because it helped everybody see that, you know, you're not really alone,
you know, just say your opinion, it's your thoughts, they're not going to be wrong.
>> Canvas allowed me to put information and images and videos that I knew were educational
and appropriate for my content into their hands for them to use outside of class.
They've been, quote, inside places and seen things
that would never been open to them before.
>> It really gave them ownership, it empowered them, it really made them excited to come
to class because they were in control of their learning.
